I am suffereing from a bit of PND and the GP has prescribed CITALOPRAM 20mg/day I haven't started them yet as I am not sure if I should be taking them whilst breast feeding. I don't want to give up breast feeding but do need something to help lift me up a bit so that I can cope, I told the GP I was breast feeding but I am not sure if they were listening!!!! Any one able to tell me if this would be safe or not.

Sorry for waffling a bit.

I would phone up the surgery and ask to speak to the GP (I'm sure they have a book which tells them which medicines are safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding) I'm sure citalopram is one of the safe ones but I would check just to put your mind at rest.

Yes, do phone. From what I've read on MN, having to give up bf before you're ready can be really upsetting so it sounds like the last thing you need. I'm sure they'll be able to reassure you that this medicine is ok or be able to offer an alternative if necessary. Oh, and you're not waffling

Please ring the Breastfeeding Network's Drugline - can't do a link atm, but just google it and you'll find the number. Or search MN for it. Or perhaps someone else will post it.

Often GPs are over-cautious and will say no drugs while bfeeding, which is crap.
