DS is 9 months old.He is breast fed 3 times a day and has a bottle of formula once a day. and 3 meals a day.He got his first tooth about two weeks ago. When I breastfed him his elevenses today he nipped me slighty when coming off both breasts. tonight when I tried to breastfeed him his supper @ 6pm he didn't seem at all interested in feeding and just kept nipping me!"!!! I was going out to evening class @ 6;45 so didn't have a lot of time so I just gave him another bottle of formula so I could get out of the house. I'm not going out tomorrow so will have all day to try to resovle this problem so any tips on how to stop this nipping would be welcome.I'm not sure if he is trying to hint that he's fed up of br/feeding or just trying out his new tooth.

Is he cutting more teeth? Can you try either giving him something cold to chew on before you feed him, or putting a bit of teething gel on his gums before you feed?

Otherwise, watch for his mouth shape changing - DS bit me a couple of times when he was teething and his jaw would move before he did it (they can't bite while actively nursing because their tongues are over their lower gums).

He might also be frustrated because the milk doesn't flow in the same way as it does from a bottle. Try using a slow-flow teat - DS had EBM from bottles a couple of times a week from 6mo and never got above a number 2 teat, because I wanted to keep him used to having to work for his milk!

Good luck with it!

thanks hm,will put the bonjela by the bed now! Good idea about the teat as well-he has a three hole teat on the bottle, mind you he has always seemed good at chopping and changing.I'll see how the bonjela works first (I think he quite likes it anyway).

My DD is 7 months and still uses a no 1 teat as she couldn't cope with anything faster.

When she has bitten me, I have taken her off and told her off quite sharply. If she has done it again in the same session I have put her on the floor for a few minutes. She screams blue murder but too bad, as I can#t have my nipples used as a toy (ouch!)

feeding DS has gone better than I thought it would today-TBH I was dreading it. REally apprehensive feeding him tonight but although he did nip coming off the breast (on and off a few times AAAGH) he did seem a bit gentler after I yelled a bit.I am hoping he has got the hint and has relised there is someone attached to nipple.I didnt use the bonjela(forgot about it until now) but he has been dribbling a lot today so more teeth may be coming through. I am presuming this is a common 'hitch' to be got through.
