Nipples suddenly painful, something DS is doing while feeding!

Hellllp!

DS is 24 weeks so positioning should be perfect right? He has suddenly starting to sort of 'gum down' on my nipple while feeding and it bloomin hurts. He hasn't got any teeth yet so it's not that. I feel bruised but everything looks okay. I don't know what to do about it as I can hardly tell him off at his age. He also breaks the latch and then reattaches a few times sometimes and that starts to hurt too. He also sometimes will just stay attached when not feeding and I have to break the latch but think I might leave it too late as I can't always tell when he has stopped.

I really want to carry on to 12 months but didn't suspect I'd run in to problems now.

Teething really messes with latch IME. I have to be on the alert to take DD off as soon as she stops seriously feeding or she uses me as a chew-toy!

Eugh but it HURTS! I might try being more attentive and breaking the latch sooner. Can't believe they can clamp so much with no teeth!

When my two started doing this, someone told me to put them down as soon as they did it.

DON'T DO THAT!

Even though it's counterintuitive, press the baby's head hard to your bosom. It will block his nose and force him to open his mouth.

They learn very quickly "if I bite Mummy quite hard she knows I've finished and I can get down and play!"

Bloody hurts and you may be able to break the habit before he gets the lethal combination of 2 teeth bottom and top. YOWCH!
