Topping up hungry 11m DD

Help, I am confused about what type of formula to top up my 11m DD. She has started to feed constantly during the night as we co-sleep and I am exhausted. I have started feeling her a bottle of formula before bed and it seems to be working (atm!). Although I have no idea if I am supposed to be feeding 'follow on milk', 'hungry' or goodnight milk.

Do u mean you still breastfeed ?? im confused lol

LizziePizzie · 05/05/2011 22:39

I still breast feed yes, this is a top up to me as i don't seem to be satisfying her hunger.

I would just use normal formula. Or whatever you used that worked! Follow on milk can make them constipated (and is no better for them than normal formula), not sure what is in the hungry stuff but it upsets my DD's tummy.

I would not recommend follow on milk it is not really nessary but i would go for hungry baby milk and then cows milk at 12 months :)

hungry milk is for babies that are not satifed on normal gold milk or breast and need that little bit extra
It upset my baby when i first tried it she started waking again in the night after sleeping through so i thought she may need it but it made her be sick agin so i stopped and she began sleeping through again with abit of baby rice in the moring insteed then about a month later she began waking again so i tried it a second time and all was fine she took to it and slept through again it is all about trial and error.

I guess I should have stated that I use HIPP Organic milk.

Thank you for the advice!

She's probably waking due to the (8 to) 11 month sleep regression: more info here, here and here.

If you do want to give formula, I'd give the normal stuff.

oh angel your post explains so much - why nearly 11 month ol DS has suddenly started waking in the night, and being really unsettled.....OP i am BF too and wondered about using formula as i thought he might be hungry too but last night he ate lots and lots and still woke up... sleeping through the night really is a myth isnt it.

I'd give extra food rather than extra milk at this age - what about some cereal before bed? If she is sucking for comfort rather than hunger then extra food will make little difference

I love AngelDog. I've said it before. She always posts what I want to say.

Classic developmental stuff. Night waking, harder to settle, often found standing up in their cots, cross etc.

LizziePizzie · 06/05/2011 15:42

I am doing BLW and have found that her appitite goes up and down so some nights she hardly eats anything which is a whole other post!!

Thank you Angeldog for the links, they are great.

Turtles - She immediately sits up when she wakes up now too, which is so frustrating as it wakes her up more! At least I know that this is all normal stuff!
