now this is definitley controversial. i was reading a book i got from the library. not the carol verderman one, but the original one, with lengthy explanations about all the chemicals, where they are found, there effect on us, etc etc etc.
apparently, one of the ways our bodies use to get rid of nasty chemicals is to excrete it in breastmilk! so giving our newborn darling babies means we are exposing them to more bad stuff than if we gave formula.
wish i could quote the book title and author.
does anyone have any idea if this is true, or just someone trying to promote formula?

Of course if you bottle feed there are still chemicals in the formula, plus the antibiotics & crap that non organic milk cows have in their milk. Then there are the chemicals/hormones in the actual plasic of the bottles, the chemicals in the washing solutions for the bottles. Then, unless you use certain baby products, there will be chemicals in that. Then I guess you could add the chemicals from the carpets, the new bedlinen you've bought the baby, then airfreshners which most people seem to have in their house. Oh & don't forget the washing powders (unless it's ecover etc) which adhere to newborn skin & pollute all the rivers/water supply..oops, forgot the artifical musks in perfume, deoderants

I think it's all relative really. For more details on chemicals in the home, check out the greenpeace website

there is zero medical credibility to the whole concept of detoxing anyway - so i wouldn't take any of this book terribly seriously.

zero medical credibility ? what about kate moss detoxing in arizona or whatever ? have you ever detoxed ? I have, even though I'm not particulary toxic (well, I am at the mo). I felt FAB after 2 weeks of colonic irrigation, drinking freshly squeezed juice & omming. Don't knock it 'til you've tried it

seem to remember thats' why its not a very good idea to diet whilst breastfeeding - because toxins are released from the fat stores & come out in the milk.
