Gone off BF's at 7mo ??

Hello.

My DS is a few days off 7mo and has been EBF. We started weaning, a mix of spoon feeding and finger foods, about 6 weeks ago. He is absolutely loving solids in any form and I am having to control portion sizes as his eyes seem to be bigger than his belly. He has really suffered with constipation since starting weaning. Over the last week he has become more and more distracted and less interested in BF. To the point where he will feed for only a few minutes if I am lucky and keeps coming off the breast and straining to sit up and look around. I am really worried that he is not getting enough milk for his age.

His current feeding pattern is roughly:

BF when wakes up
Breakfast - mashed fruit and some finger foods
BF 11am
Lunch of finger fed vegetables/rice cake
BF 2pm
BF 5pm
Tea - mashed veg and some finger foods
BF before bedtime
1x BF in night (usually early morning)

I know he should still be getting most of his nutrition from milk at the moment and am not sure what I can do to get him to drink more. Surely he is too young to 'loose interest' in BF and just want solids?

Any ideas or anyone else whose LO 'went off' BF at this age?

Thanks Smile

Some babies get terribly distracted around this age and are constantly on the go looking for the next bit of interest.

However it doesn't mean that they are ready to cease bfing or aren't in need of bfing anymore.

Kellymom has some good info here about distractible babies.

It does look like your son is still getting quite a bit of milk from you even if the feeds are short (don't forget some babies can get very efficient at feeds as they get older) but you can always offer more often outside of his usual feed times if you're concerned he hasn't had enough that day.

Hi. I don't have any advice just chipping in to say I am in the same situation only worse! DS is nearly eight months now and has gone right off his milk so I have decided to cut his solid portion sizes and go back to feeding him milk prior to solids. Up until today his eating schedule looked like this:

7am feed for around 15 mins if that!
8am porridge
11am feed for all of 10 mins
12 noon main meal of the day
2.30 feed for around 20 mins if that!
5 supper
6.30 feed for 20 mins

No night feeds anymore either so I was becoming concerned, especially after consulting the kellymom website. He just loves his food so much and i think I indulged him and he's cut down on his milk far too quickly. I'm hoping I can rein things back in! S anyway, you're not alone and I don't think you're as far down the road as i am!

Vix it is such a difficult balance to stike when they love their solids so much isn't it Confused

I tried expressing yesterday and feeding him with a bottle and he took loads more this way. Don't know where I will find the time to do this though as only managed it as DP is off work this week.

Hope your DS starts to take more milk soon.

Kellymom recommends offering bf an hour before solids until 12 months to make sure that solids are a complement to milk and not a replacement for it.
