How often do newborns feed- is this normal?

I can not for the life of me remember what ds did so...

Dd is 4 days old. She feeds every 1-2.5h max. ECM at night. She feeds for 5-20mins at a time usually quick ones. Last night she fed for 5-10 mins was burped Put down and then hungry again for over 2.5h! Me and my nipples are hanging!

Is this normal?
What can I do (if anything) to get her to feed for longer so she lasts longer between feeds?
When does it settle down?

TIA from me and my sore boobs! Blush

What is ECM?

My DD is 6 weeks old and I remember her being the same for the first week or so. She's now a total trouper and sleeps 8pm - 2am then back down til 6am.

It is perfectly normal! Has your milk come in yet? She may go longer once it is in but 2.5h max between feeds is pretty normal at this stage. Keep your nipples well greased with lansinoh or kamillosan. Have you had your latch checked to make sure it is not bad latch pain rather than just early days pain.

Sounds fairly normal to me at that stage. It does settle down. We have an eight year gap and I had totally forgotten how a bf newborn was and was asking the same sort of questions.

Sounds normal, especially before your milk's in properly. My DS fed really, really often in the first two or three days, and my milk came in really quickly as a result.

Thank all!

Milk has been in since Sunday night. Trust me!
Latch etc are all good but he had a Tongue tie which was snipped on Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately she'd already damaged my boobs and they aren't getting a chance to heal at this rate.

Glad it's normal! Although not entirely enjoying this phase!

Longer feeds doesn't necessarily mean longer breaks - their stomachs can only take so much and one baby might be able to fill up in 20 minutes, another would take 45. I think I've read breastmilk only takes 90 minutes to digest.

Kellymom has some info on frequent nursing.
