coca cola during breastfeeding?

Have been totally craving coca cola but I am breastfeeding. Is there a "safe" amount of Coke I can drink without the caffeine harming the baby? Am avoiding diet coke because of the artificial sweeteners....

Well I have two cafe Nero coffees, so four espressos, a day and my baby is fine and naps well! Shouldn't think a few cokes would have much effect.

Good old kellymom

I drank loads of tea and a few diet cokes, wouldn't have got through the days without it TBH

FriedEggyAndSlippery · 24/04/2011 06:25

Give it a go - different babies have different sensitivities. With my second I had to stick to only drinking it in the morning or he would be awake all night.

Kellymom has a good page on this issue click here
Short answer you are likely to have little/no effect from drinking coke or coffee in moderation.

Sorry, x posted with the kellymom link :)

Thanks! Having a delicious coke right now!

Oh Lordy I wouldn't have got through the breastfeeding days without caffeine.

Of course you can drink cola! you don't have to cut out all of your favourite things because you are bfing. I didn't cut out anything.

Bunbaker · 28/04/2011 07:04

If you are worried about the caffeine content you can always drink caffeine free Coke.

Trillian42 · 28/04/2011 20:24

Bunbaker - where's the fun in that though?!

I had a friend who drank caffeine free, diet coke. Why bother? It tastes foul & even she admitted it tasted awful.

LuckyWeKeptTheCot · 28/04/2011 20:28

I know someone who takes cocaine and is breastfeeding. Not advising this of course - it is horrendous. But the baby is healthy. So my point is...I reckon a can of coke isn;t going to hurt.

TimeWasting · 29/04/2011 17:22

Depends totally on the baby. DS was much happier when I cut caffeine out, but I'm quite sensitive to caffeine (addict!) so it made sense to me that he would be too.

Bunbaker · 30/04/2011 15:49

I must admit that I have never tastes caffeine free coke. My sister drinks it so I thought it might be OK.

TimeWasting is right. It probably depends on the baby, although drinking too much caffeine is bound to affect the baby. I'm sure the odd can isn't going to make much difference. Perhaps not a good idea to drink it in the evening just in case.

I also have a Coke habit (!) and am breastfeeding. I have just signed up to donate breastmilk and they asked me various lifestyle questions - including how many Cokes I drink. 1 can a day was deemed OK by them.

The milk is for prem babies, so I assume that they use the strictest rules.

Hope that helps!

Um, Lucky, cocaine is one of the very few things that are absolutely contraindicated whilst breastfeeding. If your acquaintance wants to carry on taking cocaine then she should "pump and dump" for 24 hours afterwards.

LuckyWeKeptTheCot · 05/05/2011 14:20

I know that - we have had a heated exchange at a mutual friend's hen do. She's not interested and sdaly I know several middle class mothers who do the same thing - not my friends but she has a crowd of similar minded mums. I find it very upsetting. Watching all the BBC3 stuff about 'misbehaving mums' smoking and drinking etc - you'd think it was confined to 14 year old on benefits - but no. Of course the woman I know wouldn't dream of appearing on TV and making it public. She has a high flying job and gym membership to maintain.

LuckyWeKeptTheCot · 05/05/2011 14:23

Not to mention the little illegal extras she buys. She says coke, the gym and breastfeeding are all cheaper than gettin lipo and a tummy tuck, all about her looks. She also told my friend (whose hen do we were at) that she couldn't be a bridesmaid for her if she got pregnant because she's be too fat. Sounds like I'm making it up doesn't it? Sadly not.

duke748 · 15/05/2011 20:22

Just wanted to add that when I said I had a Coke habit - I meant the Coca Cola variety.

Twas a joke, but just realised you guys are talking about someone who is actually taking cocaine whilst breastfeeding - I didn't want you to think I was and giving milk to the poorly babies!
