Breastfeeding and Weaning?

DD just had a 12 month check up at the HV today.

She said "baby will be on blue top milk now?"

(Is this some sort of secret code?)

Anyway, I said I was breastfeeding still, and she asked me about how much DD ate - I couldn't give an exact reply as DD is BLW, but I said sometimes she eats more, sometimes less, but she has 3 meals a day.

Anyway, long story short, I BF DD when I think she wants it (occasionally), and before during nap/sleep (2 naps a day, feeds lots at night). HV says she is having too much BM and will never eat properly, she should be on 2 feeds a day by now,

Should I be reducing her BM to make her eat more? How should I manage this?

HV said DD was absolutely fine in every way BTW....

If the HV is asking about blue top up milk then I would ignore everything else she is saying about bfing, because she clearly hasn't got a clue.
Especially if your DD is fine!

I presume she is talking about toddler milk which is completely unnecessary if baby is eating a well rounded diet. She can have cow's milk as a drink now.

I suppose she might have meant blue top as in full fat cows milk...

I think she means full fat cows milk. But I would ignore her on the number of feeds a day - she's blatantly pulled a number out of nowhere.

WHO says breastfeed frequently and on demand til 2 years and beyond.

I thought full fat milk was silver top? Then again it has been years since I got milk from the milkman!!

RitaMorgan · 18/04/2011 16:26

Supermarket milk is blue=full fat, green=semi-skimmed and red=skimmed.

Milkman milk was a red top for semi-skimmed though wasn't it?

KaraStarbuckThrace · 18/04/2011 16:27

Oh yes you are right lol!!

Indith · 18/04/2011 16:28

Yeah she means full fat milk. Supermarket milk- blue top is full fat, green top is semi skimmed.

Anyway she is talking shit, bf whenever you like. Unless you are force feeding her gallons of breast milk right before a meal it really isn't going to make much difference to how much she eats. Anyway if she is on 3 mealks a day how mcuh more does the HV want her to eat? Hmm

Another vote for 'ignore the HV'. I had a fab HV when DD1 was younger and she reassured me when DD1 was barely eating any solid food at 15 mo. My new HV is also cows milk-obsessed.

If your HV said your DD was fine in every way then why is she telling you to change what you're doing? That's just baffling Confused

BM is far more nutricious than full fat milk!

AngelDog · 18/04/2011 19:10

I agree - she means full fat milk, but your milk is far better for her. Your HV is talking rubbish. As Rita says, the WHO say to bf 'frequently and on-demand' till 2.

I've heard bad HV advice too - I heard one telling parents of a 10 month old they 'should' not be on more than one feed a day, whereas the one I spoke to was unfazed by me saying DS had 7 a day. Confused
