newborn screaming before pooing/pooping: why?

Hi,

Can anyone help please?

My baby is 5 weeks old. I breastfeed 90% of the time apart from the occasional bottle (formula) at night / day. He screams and really squeezes when he is going to poo/poop - at times worse than others.

He becomes red and he seems in pain. Sometimes he does it in his sleep too - it is hard to watch him being so uncomfortable. His poos are runny and normal in colour and he poos a lot- so doesn't look like he is constipated. He seems to be comforted by the breast when he is screaming - not always though. Sometimes he just screams and nothing can stop him. Sometimes he wouldn't take more milk from the breast but it is just so that he can squeeze. Anyone had any similar problems please?

I don't know what to do.

Started giving him gripe water - and bought infacol.

I'm blaming a bit myself that something is not right with my milk - but he would do the same when we give him the odd bottle.

Thanks...

xx

Feed your child with fruit juice everyday.. It could help to soften the stool.. If not then belly massage for your child bcos it can help to prevent constipation..

My DD also drink Mamil since she was 3yrs old. Its been 2 years since the first consumption, till now she have no prob with her bowel, no constipation so far! As parent we shud always look out for more alternatives, but definitely can try out Mamil if ur LO got constipation.

One of my daughter's twins had this problem, started at about 2 weeks old and continued for about 3 weeks. Normal stools, no rash no other symptoms, just this heart wrenching screaming before and during pooping. Finally was diagnosed with infant dyschezia. They just haven't figured out coordinating pooping. Nothing can be done for them, they just out grow it as they figure it out. Hard to see them go through it, but they do figure it out. Hope this helps.

Hi Mowa sorry to hear this it is so worrying when they are in pain and screaming!
No idea from a medical point of view, definitely get your baby checked out but if it's any help my baby had terrible colic and reflux (with loose stools) up until about 13 weeks.
We tried lots of colic techniques and treatments mentioned in this thread and eventually I think around 13 weeks it suddenly get better.
Thing is around 6 months she got bad excema. I was breast feeding and the dr told me to stay off dairy products as she could be allergic. I did and her skin cleared up within a week. The doctor said her milk allergy could have been a cause of the colic symptoms she had earlier.
To be honest I was a sleep deprived wreck for the first few weeks and would not have been happy managing without my cheese sandwiches and cadburys chocolate but I do wonder if I had stayed off dairy if it would have helped her colic in these early days.
So just a thought it might be he same for your baby too.
Get it checked out though as I guess there could be many reasons your little one is struggling poor thing.
And look after yourself, hope you can hand him/her over to someone else for a cuddle every now and then, when they scream like that so much it made me feel like I was losing the plot!!!!
