apparently breast isn't best?! WTF?

Have to get this off my chest. Hairdresser on saturday morning asked if I was bf, when I said I was she replied, "my sister wanted to but a doctor came on Sunrise and said formula was better so she stopped. She didn't have enough milk anyway."

I have never watched Sunrise or any other breakfast tv show but - really? How tragic. I was rather p'ed off with the implication that I was going to a lot of effort to save money ("I suppose formula is expensive for a reason").

What doctor would say that ??????

Did she see this programme recently or could it have been a few months ago when there was all that business about weaning earlier if you're BF because of iron depletion (or something)? If so perhaps she got wrong end of stick??

Must have been a mistake somewhere. Just shows how these things translate.

I'd be really p'd off at that too.
I can't believe so many people think an artificially prepared formula based on cows milk is better for human babies than human milk.

Don't get me wrong, formula has a place in our society and can be necessary. (so please don't anybody jump on me)

My DD is 11mo and lots of random folk have told me that breastmilk is no good after six months, implying I shouldn't still be BFing her. So I know how you feel

There will always be arguments/points for and against BF and FF. Personally speaking, I don't care how a mum feeds her child out of those two options because keeping her child alive should be the most important thing for any mother.

Some mums don't have a choice but to BF becaus they are not getting milk vouchers for formula. Some have no choice but to FF because they're not producing milk for baby at all or not enough, they're taking meds incompatible with BF

As we know, giving birth and just after is a vulnerable time for a lot of women, so picking on how a mother feeds her child is not a smart move and shows how low folk are willing to go to make themselves feel better.

The vouchers for FM was just an example about parents who work and are earning over a certain amount per annum even with the mother on ML.

Totally agree. I was amazed to hear that someone had been on tv saying that babies were better off on formula and I wonder how the item was presented in view of how simplistcally it was understood by this person. I have never considered bf as a sign of being a cheapskate!

Never heard of Sunrise? Is that a programme in the UK? Maybe we could google the clip.

GRRRRRRR of course breast milk is best.

Its why the world health organisation advises that all babies are fed breast milk until 1 year (or is it 2 years?)

cows milk = perfect for calves
human milk = perfect for humans
sheep milk = perfect for lambs
otter milk = perfect for baby otters (cubs?)

Of course formular has its place, as well, but just GRRRRRRRRRRRR at stupid programme!

Sorry folks for the balls-up, I've been permanently knackered the last 10 or so years. Anyway, 1st line of 2nd paragraph was meant to be about the mother being on ML and with both parents in jobs and still earning above a certain amount, but not being able to afford FM IYSWIM. Although saying that there are other reasons as well for BF instead of FF.
