i have a question and was hoping to pick a brain or two.......

Jack is on 3 meals a day plus the odd nibble here and there and loves his food, but has gone off of milk. he will have his milk at 6.30pm (8oz) and 10.30pm (8oz) no problem, but the 7am (6oz), 11.30am (5oz) and 2.30pm (6oz) he is really fussy about. I make his breakfast up with about 3oz and struggle to get the rest down him. At 11.30 (lunch) he might have 2oz max, and the 2.30pm is variable either 2 or 6oz.

I need to start thinking about cutting out the 10.30pm feed - did cut it our for about 2 weeks as he was sleeping through, but had to reintroduce it as he was waking 2-3times a night - but am worried as that would mean his milk intake would only be a max of 19oz which i am not sure is enough.

Does anyone have any advice? Should also say that we are still giving milk at night when he wakes, but got told off by HV and have started to cut it down and eventually cut it out. Should i be doing this or just wait until Jack decides he doesnt need it??

sorry long post!!! any help gratefully received

How old?
From the sounds of it he is somewhere between 6 months and 1 and I think the recommendation at this age is 20 oz. So that 1 oz you could easily make up in his food by giving him yoghurt, white sauce, cheese etc. So no problems there.

When you cut out the 10.30 pm he may regain interest in the 7 am feed? Should ensure he is pretty hungry by that point. So I don't think you really have much to worry about.

aprilmeadow i would carry on exactly as you are! don't cut out the 10.30 feed if he isn't having much during the day

if anything i would cut down the amount of food he has, as milk is still the main source of nutrition.

and as for giving milk in the night... if he wants it let him have it!

You could try dropping the 10:30pm feed an ounce at a time which would allow your lo to catch up easier on the missed calories during the day. When my dd started sleeping through at 5 1/2 months I never went back to giving a feed if she woke in the night as I felt that would be going backwards again, so no I probably wouldnt give a feed in the night and would settle him back using pick up/put down, or whatever you would normally do, instead.

DD gave up her last night feed by herself but if she hadnt done it by 6 months I would probably have started to reduce it gradually until it was just water I was offering to encourage her to take her milk during the day.

As a previous poster said, from 6 months the minimum milk is around 20ounces (600mls) and this doesnt all have to be as a drink as other dairy products also count.
