Some of my friends believe, that I'll give my breastfed baby a sore tummy if I eat dark chocolate... (OMG: disaster, if that's the case, as I love chocolate...) what do you think/what are your experiences?

Don't forget a few large glasses of wine either!

KristinaM · 26/10/2005 19:38

I would never have breast fed if I had to give up dark chocolate

danishmummy · 26/10/2005 19:48

Thanks everybody for giving my mind and tastebuds peace! -- and green light! I will now happily keep munching!!

onlysome medications and strongly flavoured foods affect breast milk.
Chocolate is a good source of vitamins B1, B2, D and E as well as the minerals potassium and magnesium, so it must be good for baby too!

spidermama · 26/10/2005 19:52

I eat large quantities of dark chocolate during breastfeeding to keep up my iron.

Lonelymum · 26/10/2005 19:55

Someone once asked me astonishd how I could drink orange juice whilst I was breastfeeding. Huh? I had no idea anyone thought this was wrong. Anyway, I carried on drinking orange juice and breast fed with no problems or ill effects four children.

motherinferior · 26/10/2005 20:19

I will freely admit I have been known to drink gin while breastfeeding. Dark choc? Stuff yourself, girl.

motherinferior · 26/10/2005 20:19

(and I mean while breastfeeding.)

popsycal · 26/10/2005 20:39

not gin like MI but beer and wine while feeding...

eating chocolate is obligatory

scaryclary · 26/10/2005 21:03

chcolate certainly obligatory danishmum, in fact I always buy it for bf new mums...
(OTOH, I was advised by my MW to steer clear of orange juice and brassicas (broc, cauli, etc) to avoid a colicky baby.
I did so and none of my 3 had colic, but I realise of course that proves absolutely nothing

welshmum · 26/10/2005 21:06

Eat and drink whatever makes you happy. Happy mum = happy baby and chocolate is excellent for an immediate burst of energy. Ds (5 months) is mainly composed of Green and Blacks White chocolate.

sweetkitty · 26/10/2005 21:16

I never avoided anything whilst breastfeeding, in fact I think chocolate must be consumed whilst breastfeeding.

aloha · 26/10/2005 21:17

God no, chocolate is essential while breastfeeding!

MrsSpoon · 26/10/2005 21:18

You have to eat chocolate when b/feeding, it's compulsory. I was advised to eat it by my midwife, she was fab!

When DS2 was tiny I was a bit embarrassed by the red wine stains on his white babygros!

BudaBabe · 26/10/2005 21:18

FULL of iron.

MrsSpoon · 26/10/2005 21:19

LOL three great minds think alike! It's a must!

bobbybob · 27/10/2005 00:32

Dark chocolate was one of the few things I could eat whilst breastfeeding - no dairy or eggs or nuts because of ds's allergies.

It makes you feel happy and is less fattening than the dairy kind. Do it!
