Follow on milk

Hi all,

My baby is 5 months old and is now formula fed, should I switch to follow on milk from 6 months? I think I have read on here that there is no real difference, however, the follow on milk is sometimes on special offer so would in turn be cheaper for us! Obviously we will stick with the normal formula if that's what's best! Just wondered if we should be moving to the follow on? If not why not!

Thanks

It isn't necessary or recommended. The first milk is all they need and I believe is more tightly reguated than 6+ month milk.

There is no nutritional need for follow on milk. First or infant formula is all your baby needs. At one year they can move onto full fat cows milk.

Follow on and toddler milks were invented to get around the breastfeeding protection laws that prevent advertising for infant formula milk. There is no need for them. If you want to give them you can but there is health reason to do so.

I did switch as you can get offers on the milks - I also switched brands to make it even cheaper.

Some babies get v constipated on follow-on milks (because of the extra, undigestible iron Hmm). So if you do switch, and you run into this problem, either try different brands, or switch back.
