Help! Sickness & BFing

Hello

Hope you can help. My 9mo DD is BF, has never had formula and thus far refuses to take a bottle of EBM.

Not a problem until now, when I woke up with really bad D&V. I can't keep any food down, struggling to even keep water down. Is she going to be getting enough milk from me? Should I stop BFing? Is there anything else I should be giving her?

she'll be fine. your illness shouldn't affect your milk supply

KathyImLost · 18/03/2011 14:04

Not even the fact I'm not eating anything? This is what I was hoping to hear, thank you x

No keep feeding her and keep drinking as much as you can - little & often may help it stay down. Giving plenty of milk feeds will give her immune system protection against the bug too.

Kellymom has more info.

I think the worst that'll happen is that your supply dips a bit, but she'll make up for it afterwards. Just keep an eye open for any signs of dehydration, but I think you'd have to be seriously dehydrated yourself for it to have an effect on your milk.

Hope you're better soon. It's horrible, isn't it - I had a D&V bug when DS was 13 m.o. and it was miserable.

nope. your body will have enough reserves, and will provide for the baby first. so YOU may feel crappy, but baby will be fine :)

hope you're feeling better soon

Cross-posted!

Unless you're seriously malnourished in the longer term, your milk won't be affected by not eating.

Keep feeding - I know it is a bit grim when you suddenly need to hurl the baby to one side and run for the bathroom!

It's the best way to prevent your baby getting your bug.

I think she gave it to me! I just assumed she was teething. But yes, thanks all, very reassuring x

God know how you feel. Awful isnt it, but as everyone says keep feeding and drink loads of fluids. Baby will be fine. Hope you got someone to look after you.:)

The only issue is that you will get more dehydrated, so if it doesn't stop within 24 hrs, get some meds to stop you throwing up. And drink gatorade or Dioralyte or something like that.

Definitely keep feeding though - you don't want mastitis on top!
