Breast pumps. Which one?

Asking for my sister who is due in July. I used the electric Medela (sic) pump and that was fine no probs, but this was a few years ago. I have noticed that Medela have a 'swing' electric pump and that Tommy Tippee also do one now, vary in cost by about £30. Although cost is not really a factor would like some opinion as to which one is best and why if possible......thanks

I used the medala electric pump and found it excellent, having previously tried a manual pump and gave myself RSI and only being able to express about 1 ounce of milk at any one time, not much use to anyone! That said, I wasnt expressing to return to work so therefore didnt need a stockpile of milk, mine was more for a night out or just for my husband to feed, but the Medala worked a treat. Hope this helps:)

Thanks that's the one I used, I might just stick with what I know and buy my sister that one.
Thanks Again

I have been using a Medela Electric (£60ish) to express enough for occasional trips out and it was fine. I recently splurged on a Medela Freestyle (£200 ish) as I want to increase the frequency I pump and to double pump. The difference is amazing- the Freestyle gets more milk more gently in less time.

If she just wants to express sometimes, the Electric or Swing would be fine, but if she's pumping to return to work or to replace regular feeds, I would get the best one you can afford.

It really depends on what you need it for. A pump for the occasional express could be a hand pump (some people find them easier to use when only pumping occasionally). If pumping small amounts more regularly, a single electric is better than a hand pump IMO, but which brand is very up to you. If she needed to pump alot, e.g. if her LO had some issues at first, then a double would be best by a long way. There's a good argument for waiting until the LO is here - if she had real issues immediately, like if the LO was in SCBU, then she should get the use of a hospital pump anyway, so would still have time to buy whichever one suited her situation best.

I rate the Ameda Lactaline (a double) over the Medela Swing (single) TBH having tried both. The Ameda is more basic but is way better IME.
