Stockpiling at night!

DS2 (now 25 weeks) has been gradually taking less and less milk during the day and more at night, and somehow we have now reached the point where he is taking 3 big feeds in the night totalling say 14oz and only about 15oz all day. He has only just started on tiny spoonful of puree at lunchtime so its not solids that are knocking him off during the day. Anyone else going through this and how do i turn things round to taking more in daytime? Thanks

No advice and not quite the same, but my ds is also having more at night than I would like him to. I don't mind the amounts, but for a long time he was feeding every two hours in the night, which was more frequently than in the day

I am trying to gradually restrict the time of night feeds (am breastfeeding, so don't know how much ds has but assume he has less in less time) to encourage him to eat more in the day. It seems to be working gradually. I think it has to be pretty gradual.

Thanks Lummox. Had tried a couple of nights to replace one of the night feeds with water but that only settled him for 40 mins and then he woke again. But as you suggest maybe it would be better to try a gradual reduction, and maybe try and give him an ounce less each time instead. Am going back to work next week so that is why I am stressing!

What is his routine during the day?

Swirl · 24/10/2005 20:29

His routine has gone a bit out the window the last 2 weeks, as having to leave DS1 up to childminder to get settled in before DS2 goes up next week. But roughly something like this:
Wakes 6am
Feed 6.20am: 2 oz
Nap in car: 7am - 7.45am
Feed 10am: 2 oz
Nap 11am - 12.30
Feed 1pm: a little bit of fruit puree
Feed 1.30pm 2 oz
Nap in car: 3 - 3.45pm
Feed 4.15pm 2 oz
Feed 6.30pm 7oz
Falls asleep straight away

Wakes for feed 9.30pm 5oz
Wakes for feed 1am 5oz
Wakes for feed 4am 4oz

All up the left basically!

So he really won't take any more than 2oz at those feeds during the day? Hmmm, not sure what to suggest, was wondering if he was getting overtired in the day and not feeding well because of that but he's getting plenty of nap time. Strange that he takes a lot at the 6.30pm feed. Is there anything different about that one comparend with the others (e.g. fewer distractions?).

Swirl · 24/10/2005 20:39

Yes Gingernut the last feed is in his room and lights off with no distractions. He drains the bottle dry. He is so nosy during the day I think that puts him off but I cant understand how he can last all day with so little in his tummy and then have room to pack it all in at night. Even when I try him with the remainder of a bottle about an hour later during the day he wont touch it. Stubborn little article (takes after his mum!)

Well, I have a nosy one too (in fact, both mine have been) so I know what you mean. Try keeping the other daytime feeds as quiet as possible then (difficult sometimes, I know). I'd also go with lummox's suggestion re cutting down night time milk gradually.

Hi Swirl,

Just wanted to say that my DS is very similar to yours...It's frustrating isn't it.. He too is easily distracted although for a while now I've tried to keep the distractions to a minimum. I keep hoping it's just a phase and that as long as he's putting weight on and is happy that is the main thing. Wishing you all the best.

My DS is 26wks and is pretty much the same. He has about 19-24oz a day, but 16oz are between 6.30pm and 10.30pm. He too is VERY nosy, and also seems far more interested in his food. He is on 3 meals a day approx 5/6 ice cubes per meal plus his breakfast. When I make his cereal/oatmeal up i use 3oz off his milk to make sure that he gets some milk, struggle to get the remaining 3oz down him.

How much does your DS2 weigh? Is he still gaining ok? My DS is 20lbs 1oz, but has been on solids since 17weeks
