I only ever get about 90ml and that is from both breasts combined. My baby is 10 weeks old and I am mix feeding breast and formula. Just wondered what is normal and any tricks for getting more.

hello all, glad it's not just me having issues. Expressed for first time on Mon, and only got 2 and half oz after 2 goes! V. unimpressed. This is supposed to be my ticket to 2 hrs out at yoga once a week (first try at post birth exercise). will try the internet thing.....

Goldrill, I too live in the back of beyond and about 2-3 hours from the nearest milkbank. But they were more than happy to come and collect my freezer stash. If you are interested it might be worth sending your nearest one an email, or asking your local hospital which milkbank they use.

I am now expressing for them daily and sometimes get 4oz (one boob) and sometimes only 1oz. I just try my best not to worry about the amount, its all useful to them anyway.

so I am normal? That's good, and good to know dd gets more each feed than I express. Am mix feeding because she lost over 20% of weight in first few weeks and ook 4 weeks to regain birth weight and pediatrician said it was top up with formula or special care with tube feeding. Never managed to get her back to exclusively breast feeding but have managed to get her breastfeed only in the day and formula in evening and night (with breast too) and to be honest this works for us now as means dh can help and so can my mum. But I think she gets about 60-70% of her milk from me.

I was very cheesed off that i only got small amounts when expressing (used to get 20ml sometimes) but I read on kellymom a couple of days ago that 1/2 to 2oz is the norm to express and that it is likely to take a couple of sessions to get enough for a feed. The site describes more than that amount as oversupply. I've been expressing a lot over the last week as I've had to be bottle-feeding DS and the amounts have got better as I've gone along. I now usually get 60-80ml per session with my left producing double what my right does. I also do breast compression while I express which makes a big difference to how much I get

With DD1 I used to get over 7oz from each side and if I wasn;t paying attention (watching telly for eg) the bottle would overflow all over me! Blush I was a regular dairy cow! And that was when DS was only about 6 months! Poor little thing had to learn to guzzle fast if he wanted to avoid drowning.
No such luck with DS2 - all went wrong and had to stop after about 5 weeks Sad
