Will tandem nursing affect my supply?

I have never had any problems with supply but I am early on my third pg an still nursing DC2 and hope to continue. But a part of me is worried I wont have enough milk, or that it may make all those things that can go wrong with bf more likely to, e.g over engorgement leading to blocked ducts or mastitus or thrush.

I had mastitus, thrush and blocked ducts on DC1 but not on DC2 will tandem nursing make them worse or more likely, or my supply lower and the baby end up not getting enough?

No, humans are meant to tandem feed, or breastfeeding would completely wipe out your fertility - it will be fine :) In fact it's probably beneficial as one will keep the stimulation going if the other isn't great (latch issues etc).

I've found the mechanics of tandem feeding v easy, nothing can sort engorgement out as fast as a feeding toddler. However, struggled emotionally at first, nearlt taught toddler words I don't want him to know/ wanted to physically push him off me. Second LLL book being very helpful and have been very glad still feeding ds1 this week when had stinker of cold

Um sorry to hijack, but upsy, is your name upsy daisy's ex stylist, or upsy daisy sex stylist? Because I keep reading it as the latter Grin

BertieBotts, Grin what does a sex stylist do?

I had loads of problems with DC1. Fewer minor issues easily resolved whilst tandem feeding DC1 and DC2. No problems at all whilst I trandem feed DC1,2 and 3.

As you know more about breastfeeding you are less likely to have issues and more likely to know what to do if you do. Plus as nursing works on a supply and demand basis, you are more likely to have more than enough milk, rather than too little !

I usually feed one of the older nurselings first before the baby but that was because I naturally lean to over supply even when nursing just one baby and engorgement was bad for the first couple of months this time around. The baby had no chance of feeding until a bit of the milk had been removed.

ex, ex, it is the lack of gaps. I too would like to know what a sex stylist does. Ambles off to 4OD to see if an exploitative and midly titilatting documentary has already been made. Nope still confused

Grin It does sound like something you'd find on channel 4. I dread to think what kind of "sex stylist" upsy daisy would be!

I had no problems at all with tandem nursing, but I think this is because I knew much more about it second time round.

There were a few engorged moments, and ds2's tummy was clearly full long before the engorgement was relieved, so I got ds1 to help out. I also sometimes got ds1 to take a little bit of milk from an engorged breast when it was too full for ds2 to latch on.

I do think that both these things may well have led to problems, but this time round, I was able to prevent them happening as I had the knowledge and experience and the willing older nursling to nip them in the bud.

I ended up with oversupply issues, but again because I knew what the problem was, it was easily remedied before it caused any serious problems.

Do you know what though, despite everything I knew about breastfeeding and seeing ds2 fill every nappy with copious amounts of poo, as well as growing in front of my eyes, I STILL worried about not having enough milk!! It must be inbuilt Shock but I managed to reason with myself after ds2 put on 17oz in 8 days!!

Good luck with it, and I also recommend Adventures in Tandem nursing.

Re sex stylist..... you need caps!! UpsyDaisySexStylist Wink
