Breast Milk Icecream?

I had to check if it was 1st April today!

I' doubt it's going to encourage more mothers to bf, based on the tastiness of the icecream (as the shop claims), and I am sure it's more about publicity for the shop, but better than hiding bfing away!

I just had a run in with a friend on Facebook about this. She posted that it was "ewwwwwwww" and then a whole bunch of her other friends (who i dont know) started commenting on not just the idea of BM icecream but breast feeding in general and how "ick" it was and it should really be done (if you had to do it at all) decently hidden away at home in privacy.

As a Formula Feeder and one who has felt seriously resentful of being made to feel inferior becuase i didnt continue to breastfeed, i never thought i would be defending breastfeeding but i just couldnt let that level of stupidity and juvenille prejudice go unchallenged.

so maybe it has served a purpose other than self promotion for the shop.

I really can't believe other women would think bfing should be done in private, regardless of their feeding choice! So, good that you challenged it. I can understand a teenage boy being like that, but not other grown women, and presumably some of them mothers themselves and know how hard it is bringing up a baby, whether ffing or bfing.

but actually, really, bm is foul. have you actually tasted it?! (and i bf'd both of mine so have no hang-ups about it). but it has such a nasty taste and aftertaste. or maybe it's just my bm that tastes like that!

I think its a total waste turning breastmilk into ice cream. I would rather give my breastmilk to the tiny premies fighting for life in neo natal intensive care.

Brestmilk is liquid gold and it seems stupid to waste it when many babies HAVE to have formula because breastmilk is simply not available.

CamperFan · 25/02/2011 09:24

mine is really sweet! not that I consume it on a regular basis. I do agree reallytired, do you know if Milk Banks will take milk that you already have in the freezer, or does it have to be from being expressed AFTER you have contacted them and been screened?

I HATE their advertising I find it sexist. So I suppose they think it has worked? Hmm

mrsgordonfreeman · 25/02/2011 09:33

My baby's too old for me to donate the milk. They have to be under 6 months.

reallytired · 25/02/2011 09:33

Queen Charlottes hospital took my frozen breastmilk nine years. They screened me after I had expressed the milk.

This website will give you contact details.

I had a lovely lady called Gillian who used to come out and collect my breastmilk once a month.

mrsgordonfreeman · 25/02/2011 09:40

I got messed around by them and was out of the country in any event.

I know you can donate after but you have to start before. I chased them for weeks and then got stuck in New York for a month. By the time I got back, dd had turned 6 months.

mrsgordonfreeman · 25/02/2011 09:42

So don't think I didn't think of it.

If I had had time I would have given them a plug.

RJandA · 25/02/2011 11:04

I think you have to start donating before your baby is 6 months, but if you have done that then you can continue as long as you like.

There seemed to be some rules about not donating if you regularly drink more than a couple of glasses of wine / some amount of coffee, which would rule me right out I'm afraid Wine Wine Wine

(Yes!! Have been waiting for an opportunity to use that one)

MrsGangly · 25/02/2011 14:32

I've been donating milk (to SCBU, not for ice cream!) and am 'allowed' 2 units of alcohol and 6 cups of coffee a day.

RJandA · 25/02/2011 16:01

2 units?! How do you live? Can you save it all up for a blast-out at the weekend?
