How often does your 7 month old feed?

MoonUnitAlpha · 23/02/2011 21:39

How many times a day does your 7 month old feed? All my real life friends are formula feeding and are down to 2-3 bottles a day now - my ds eats three meals and we're maintaining 5 breastfeeds a day at the moment.

I have a feeling that if I didn't offer though, we'd be down to 4 or maybe just 3 - does that sound like enough?

My DS3 is just coming up to 8 months. He has a morning feed and a bed time feed and two feeds in the night. Not sure if this is right but he seems fine on it!

notnowbernard · 23/02/2011 21:42

Mine's 6 and a half m

He feeds a lot still, I think

Though is on 3 meals also. I would say 5-6 times during the day and 1000 times during the night Hmm

I am looking to minimise the night feeds Grin

beancounting · 23/02/2011 21:52

Glad someone else has asked this, do you feed at the same times each day? I reckon DD (also 7mo) has 5 or 6 feeds in the day (but at totally random times other than bedtime) and 2 or 3 times in the night.

I saw the HV yesterday who advised me to cut down to 4 feeds in 24 hours (none of which should be at night, apparently) in order to encourage DD to take more solids (we're doing BLW and it's not going terribly well). She looked at me a bit askance when I said I was still feeding on demand so DD's feeds are a bit all over the place depending on what she's doing/how she's feeling - felt a bit like a crazy hippy Blush.

And apparently I need to do CC in order to cut out the night feeds Hmm.

notnowbernard · 23/02/2011 21:56

Good old HVs Grin

I would say random feeds in the day still normal at this age

DS eats 3 'meals' but the amounts are quite small

You don't have to do CC but I agree cutting dowm on night feeds is difficult with a bf baby who wakes wanting to feed - it's the only thing thatgets DS back to sleep and quite frankly I am exhausted

But CC isn't my thing (atm anyway)

MoonUnitAlpha · 23/02/2011 22:03

DS's feeds are quite regular/predictable -

Breastfeed first thing in bed 6-7am
Breakfast 8ish
Breastfeed before nap 9.30/10am (he loves this feed and it's the only one he really "demands")
Lunch 12ish
Breastfeed after lunch/before nap 1/1.30pm (I always offer)
Breastfeed after his nap 3-4pm (Least interest in this one and would far rather have a rice cake instead!)
Dinner 6pm
Breastfeed before bed

I don't often feed him at night now unless he's ill or teething, but he does have a formula dreamfeed of 100ml at 11pm.

I didn't do CC to stop the nightfeeds either - just sent DP in to give him a cuddle if he woke between 11pm-6am.

My son is 6 and a half months old, and is still feeding regularly throughout the day and night.

He is a snacker, so will have 10 minutes of boob here and there. He regularly feeds throughout the night.

We are doing BLW (Baby Led Weaning) and every day is different with regards to him eating food.

He's happy with this though, and so am i.

ChunkyPickle · 23/02/2011 22:08

Mine's on 2 meals and a snack at 6.5 months (and he's a good eater - it all goes down), and hasn't noticably cut down his feeds at all (although BF, so he might be drinking less each time maybe)

We're at... (furiously thinks, as I'm also a crazy feed-on-demander) 1 morning, one at morning nap, one at afternoon nap, one in evening, one late evening, and 2-3 overnight.

If what he eats is dry then he'll probably be wanting a sip or two after a solid meal too.

I'm presuming that if he wasn't hungry/thirsty for it, he wouldn't be asking for it

ChunkyPickle · 23/02/2011 22:11

And by asking, I obviously mean head butting any bit of bare flesh with an open mouth in the hopes it's a bit that dispenses milk....

MoonUnitAlpha · 23/02/2011 22:20

3-4 feeds a day sounds like it's on the low side then.

beancounting · 24/02/2011 13:39

At least I'm not the only crazy hippy then Grin. Thanks for the timings, MoonUnit, I think we perhaps do need a bit more structure to our days.

DD will go back to sleep without feeding about 50% of the time, which is great, but I just wish she'd stop waking up so often!

ChunkyPickle, DD tries to latch on to my shoulder or whatever's nearest, doesn't seem to have realised the skin needs to be bare. Her feeding cues when she was tiny were so much more subtle [sigh].

blackcurrants · 24/02/2011 15:13

"And by asking, I obviously mean head butting any bit of bare flesh with an open mouth in the hopes it's a bit that dispenses milk...."

thanks, chunkypickle you made me laugh! Glad it's not just our house!
I think DS' feeds go like this:
6am(on waking): sometimes
8-9am (pre-nap) always
somewhere between 11am-noon (pre-nap)
somewhere around 3pm (pre-nap)
sometimes around 5pm (nap-ette)
before bed at 7pm.

We're doing BLW and he eats lunch straight after his lunchtime nap, and has dinner with us around 6pm. I'd probably feed less if I wasn't feeding to sleep (want to stop doing that but argh how?) and sometimes he has a quick suck then dozes off, wheras sometimes he has a long feed. If he's grumpy in the day (teething or coldy) I'll offer, and if he's hopefully headbutting I'll feed him. I hadn't considered whether I was feeding him too much, as we don't have much of a schedule, I suppose. He goes to nursery 3 days a week and they feed him 4oz of expressed BM every 3-4 hours there.

LeoniPoni · 24/02/2011 15:36

Oh my goodness I feel so much better after reading this thread. DS is 7.5 months and we are doing BLW also. He has the same schedule as some of your LOs.

6am - BF
8-9am - Breakfast
11am - BF (pre-nap)
1230-1ish - Lunch
3-4ish - BF (pre-nap)
6ish - Tea
And then of an evening it varies. Sometimes a few feeds before bed and then none overnight. Sometimes we have a hungry night.

To be honest I've been feeling like a bit of a freak lately for not having weaned DS off the breast. Especially when feeding in public. And family and friends seem surprised he still feeds so often which upsets me sometimes. I need to come on here more often I think!!

Petsville · 24/02/2011 19:14

We've also got about 5 feeds for 7-month DS. I get up with DS at 6, feed him straight away, offer another feed just before I go to work (which he sometimes wants and sometimes doesn't). Then I'm at work all day, DH is SAHD and offers 3 meals and tries to spoon in some formula before lunch and supper. We're BLW, so the amount of solid food that goes down varies enormously. Then I dash home for bedtime and do a bedtime feed. He normally wakes for another one around 10-11, but doesn't ever get fed between midnight and 6 or I can't function at work. DH soothes him back to sleep if he wakes up in that 6-hour spell.

I didn't plan to do this (and would like to give up if only DS wasn't a ferocious bottle refuser) but I've never thought of it as freaky: most of my RL friends have fed to at least 9 months.

lmisssunshine · 24/02/2011 21:14

My 6 and a half month old is still breast feed about 5 feeds and three meals a day, but does have a night feed. I was feeling the same about other friends that stoped BF before 6 months and even a lot earlier and some family are shocked I am still BF I thought about options and went with my heart, so still carrying on, for now.

Woodlands · 24/02/2011 22:52

My 7 month old has been upping his solid food intake and easing off on the milk within the last week or so, quite noticeably. The current pattern is as follows:

Somewhere between 3-8am breastfeed
8am breakfast
9.30am breastfeed (before nap)
12.30pm lunch
1.30pm breastfeed (before nap)
5.30pm tea
7pm breastfeed (before bed)
11.30pm breastfeed

So now down to 5 feeds, though sometimes he feeds after his afternoon nap as well. It was about 7 until a week or two ago.

DD is 7 months next week. Still bf kind of on demand, but similar timings to some of your LOs plus she has a bottle at 11pm ish. I don't feed to sleep except in the night. She has anything from 7-12 feeds in 24 hours. Only going 1-3 hours in the night at the moment which is driving me crazy and I go back to work at the end of March. We are blw which is going well but variable in quantities consumed. Need to night wean but can't do cc. DH won't get up through the night as he has to work. Am going to see if HV has any advice on Monday. She is vaguely sensible so here's hoping.

TittyBojangles · 25/02/2011 09:36

Do HVs 'get' BLW where you are? My HV had never heard of it Hmm

I thought if you were BLW then the milk intake would prob stay higher for longer as they aren't likely to be getting as much food as with purees etc?

kathrynEBH · 25/02/2011 09:39

Thank god for this thread, my dd is almost 9 months and I feed on demand-she's not that into food (blw) and so still feeds anywhere between 5 and 20 times a day, feeds to sleep, naps on me and comes in our bed from 11ish. She feeds a few times in the night but attaches herself usually. She will go down in her cot at 7ish for bed but wakes up at 9ish then again at 11 which is when I put her in with me. Only problem is that I have to go back to work in 2 weeks, managed to reduce to 2 8.5 hour days but am so worried about how dd will manage and about my pumping ability at work! Sorry for rant!

My DD is 6.5months old. We don't have a schedule at all, everyday is different.
But genereally she feeds at about:
5-6am ish
9am
12am
3-4am
6.30am
on and off the breast a lot before she falls alseep at about 8pm.
and then once a night, sometimes twice.

She feeds for only a few minutes most feeds, and I'm always left wondering if she's had enough, but she goes to sleep between feeds (still!...I thought she's be more awaye during the day by now, but i do sling her a lot during the day).

We are doing BLW too, and started a couple of weeks ago and she hardly eats a thing yet.

Our HVs only recomment BLW, and they discourage spoon feeding. The weaning info session was showing us the BLW video and talkign about it, so yes they are quite clued up on it.

Saying that I got her weighed the other day and she has dropped very slightly on her percentile chart and the HV said maybe spoon feed a bit in a couple of months time if she's still not eating much Hmm

choceyes · 25/02/2011 10:10

i meant 12pm, 3-4pm, 6.30pm ofcourse!

RitaMorgan · 25/02/2011 10:19

I haven't mentioned BLW to my HV - but I haven't bothered seeing her since the last set of jabs Grin

My ds took to BLW pretty quickly though and manages to get quite a lot of food into himself - he dropped one breastfeed within the first week and another soon after, and has been on about 6 feeds a day since then.
