a cup for all milk feeds - will it work?

my dd2 (nearly 5 months) doesn't take a bottle. I would like to stop bf totally when i go back to work when she is 7 months old. I have had some success with tipping milk into her from a cup and am hoping that over the next 8 weeks or so, her motor skills will improve enough for her to have all her milk feeds from a cup.

is this workable though? does anyone have a dc that has had all milk feeds from a cup, even in the night if they wake?

i know i could keep bf at night but I would rather not if possible for lots of reasons.

I have breastfed and used a cup but only when I had expressed for my partner to give the feed. It is a bit tricky though and I wouldn't have liked to have done it all of the time. In my opinion I think it would be easier to breastfeed normally at night for a start and gradually replace feeds in the day with the cup. At night it can be harder sometimes going to the fridge and then trying to cup feed when your baby isn't completely comfortable with it. That's just my opinion from experience. Good luck.

A friend of mine has a bottle refusnik. She has managed to get the baby to take water and milk in the cup throughout the day (as she is to return to work soon) and just BF's at night. Baby was 5.5 months when process started and it took a good week of her refusing to BF in the day.

Not looking hopeful then! what will i do? Was hoping a combination of solids and milk from cup would do.
better think again!

You should be ok. It will just take a little time for your baby to get used to cup and it will have to be gradual. When baby eats more solid food it will get easier anyway because baby won't need as many milk feeds. Don't panic it will be fine just be patient and you will get there before you have to go back to work I'm sure!

My DS took a Tommee tippee 'tip it up' when he refused all other bottles/beakers. They are the brightly coloured ones. When I stopped bf at 9 months he took all his milk from this.

Thanks! i know it will be ok but wanted it all to be so easy! Will keep trying a bottle and cup and see how it goes.
