Hi, I'm sure there have been loads of similar posts on here, but I didn't have time to search through - sorry Smile

Had DS2 a week ago today, BFing fine, but this evening I've got a hard sore spot on my left boob - any advice?
Have had a shower (can't have a bath as had a c- section) and tried hot compresses. Feeling a bit shivery and temp slightly up... Has anyone got any top tips?

Sounds like a blocked duct that's turning to mastitis. Kellymom has info I think. Try heat before feeds, massage before and during feeds and cold after feeds (I found the breast nurse gel pads very useful). And feed, feed, feed! Maybe try ibuprofen (I found it helpful) and if you feel feverish tomorrow, call your doctor to see if they think you need antibiotics (not all mastitis needs ABs and if you don't need them, you don't want them as they increase your risk of getting thrush!).

Thanks for such a quick response Japhrimel I think you're right - it's come on very suddenly though. MW coming tomorrow so will get her to check it out before the weekend.

feed, feed off the side to try and get DS to clear the blockage. If you can (difficult after c section) get him to feed with his chin to the blockage or leaning over him so gravity can help too. If it gets worse and does not clear see your GP.

blueberry thanks so much for that tip- it wasn't feeling much better and had been feeding for 40 mins! Saw your tip and changed hold and its eased a little. Temp is up though but think that's because my c section pain killers are wearing off

Thanks again for your help. Had a pretty hideous night with high temp but luckily coincided with a growth spurt so ds2 was very happy to oblige by feeding off bad side. Temp broke at about 5am and now just some tenderness on that side- phew!

glad it's easing clareanna. i had this a few times, one piece of advice that helped was feeding in different positions, so they're definitely clearing that duct. one position was lying the baby on the bed, with you sitting above their head and leaning forwards (kind of upside down feeding) was really odd, but it did clear my blocked duct! Hot showers and massaging in shower can help too.
