teeth and breast feeding

DS is cutting his first tooth (very exciting proud mummy moment)and is still breast feeding. He is 7 months. Problem is that he bites down sometimes and it really hurts. is there any way of training a 7 month old not to do this? Is it a short term teething thing? He went through a stage of gumming me a few months ago which hurt but not so badly and then he stopped.

Any advice please from anyone with any experience of this???

mine did this a couple of times but stopped after i screamed in pain and swiftly removed him. i didnt do it on purpose but it did the trick

Same here giggs. I said, 'OW! No!' and took him off. His bottom lip went out and he looked at me as if I'd just really upset him. He's eight months old now with five teeth and he has bitten me, properly like this, about three times ever. It's usually when a tooth is coming through or when he's dropping off to sleep whilst feeding.

Very painful, but worth it in the long run.

I was just the same as gigglinggoblin and spidermama - I shrieked in pain and removed her from the breast, she burst into tears in horror at my reaction, and she never bit me again.

I used to stuff more boob in her mouth until she couldn't bite, only suck.

lol ginger. I do that. If I think he's teething and there's a danger, I stuff a right ol' gobful in.

Thank you - sounds like we will get through this stage then. Only problem is DS always laughs if I skriek or say "no" in a cross voice. maybe the removing him part will get the message across.

Neettee, My ds is 6.5 months old - 2 teeth coming in and he's bitten me this week... same reaction as you had... when I sreamed and told him "no" in a cross voice, he just giggled...

The official advice is to pull them closer in so they can't breathe, as they will then let go of their own accord. Pulling them off while attached by teeth could seriously damage your nipple!

Don't scream too loud as it could put them off altogether. Unless that's your whole plan, of course.

When my ds was first teething and started biting occasionally, I too shrieked and removed him. After a horrendous couple of weeks, I found that the more I removed him, the more he bit me, and that either stuffing his mouth full of boob - or sticking my finger in the corner of his mouth (so that he couldn't close his mouth) as soon as he tensed his jaw to bite worked much better, and soon stopped the biting. Much to my relief since I was thinking that I would have to stop breastfeeding him.
