bf 6 week old constipated

My 6 week old is normally EBF but in the last few days he had to have some formula. He hasn't pooed since Thursday night but is really windy (bottom end). Is there something I should be doing to relieve this or is it quite normal and will resolve of its own accord?

Thanks

How are you making the formula? Measuring the amount of water first then adding powder? How often was your DC pooing before? And are they still weeing as often? Are they still breastfeeding and how often? Sorry for the spanish inquisition - just trying to get a clearer picture so that you can get the correct advice.

I'm using the ready made aptamil as it's back up in case there's not enough ebm. Most feeds it's 1/3 to 1/2 formula max. He normally poos every day at least once. One concern is that he's not getting enough milk from me. My right side has got a nasty scab on the nipple and it's really hard to get anything out by hand expressing. I've just tried expressing in a hot bath and it's a bit better but I imagine it's pretty hard work for him. So he seems to give up and go to sleep but then scream that he hasn't had enough within a few minutes. He seems to be really uncomfortable. He is weeing well although not as well as he was while he was being totally bottle fed for 3 days this week. I'm breastfeeding 3 hourly at the mo.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

I'm not sure whether I should be getting hold of the health visitor

I would carry on bf as much as possible. Breastmilk has a naturally laxative effect so should help to get things moving. Would you be able to try feeding 2 hourly. Or even more often if he will take it? More frequent feeding would also improve your milk supply. How do you feel about giving him some formula - would you rather not? Is he gaining weight ok? Could it be wind making him uncomfortable? As for the scab, are you treating it with anything? Keeping it moist with Lansinoh may help with the feeding and healing. Have you tried contacting LLL or NCT to see if there is anyone in your area who could come see you?

When my ds first had formula (Aptimil cartons too) he was very windy and uncomfortable - it was only an occasional bottle every couple of days at about 6 weeks as well. His digestive system settled down within a week or so though.
