Hi been to GP today as I think DD has silent reflux she did not confirm this but has given us some gaviscon to start and will see us again next tuesday. How long does it normally take to start working.

Have had awful day with her screaming at every feed and all day has only taken 5 oz!

Gaviscon works by thickening the milk so that it is harder for it to come back up through the valve at the top of the stomach. It should also neutralise some of the stomach acid that does reflux back up. Technically, it should therefore work straightaway.

Although it's 13 years since we went through the same thing with DD Shock, I seem to remember she took a while to settle with it, as she was used to feeding being uncomfortable and we couldn't tell her it would be better now! I found it was easier to feed her reasonably upright, and keep her upright after the feed. I also used anti-colic bottles from Lindam, which helped. The other thing was not to wind her straight after the feed, but give it time to go down and stay down before the wind brought it up again.

I hope this helps a bit. Good luck!
