Newborn drinking 100ml per feed?

Hi all
We have a little boy who is now 5 days old and hes now needing 100ml of formula per feed to be content.
Average of about 8 feeds per 24hours.

Is this normal?

depends how big he is, I was given rule of thumb of baby drinking one sixth of her body weight in total over the 24 hrs. This may not be accurate for all babies but it has turned out to be a fairly good estimate for my dd. 800ml over 24hrs on this basis would imply 4.2kg or 9lb 4oz, is this close at all? Don't worry if it isn't, doesn't mean your ds still isn't perfectly normal!

Sorry my bad maths, would be 4.8kg, or 10 and a half pounds!

He was born 6 pound 11 (3.030kg) and dropped weight after birth a bit.

He may just be back to aroun 3kg now.

That does sound like an awful lot of formula then - is he just a very sucky baby? Maybe a dummy would help if he just needs to suckle?

If your DS was BF then you wouldn't know how much he was getting, so I wouldn't worry about how much formula he is taking as long as it seems to be satisfying him. Maybe he is catching up for his weightloss. That said my FF DD was a very sucky baby and was really content to suck on my little finger (a dummy would be more convienient), but she would reject a bottle if she was full and suck a finger instead. She has now moved onto her thumb.

Is he keeping it down? If so go with the flow. If he takes that much in one go he must be a hungry little chap. DS1 was like that, he's now a strpping big 6ft 18yr old.Grin He's always been a hungry boy but never overweight, always on the go with high metabolism I think.
My MIL advised me on his reaching the constantly hungry(er than normal) teenage years, quantity not quality at this age!Wink
However DD3 was a greedy girl but couldn't keep it down, very sickly with it. Started on formula as I didn't even have the strength to hold her after 2 eclaptic seizures during labour.Shock Started BF after 6 days, was entirely BF by 4 weeks, but still very hungry (constantly feeding) and very sickly. Also lots of pain and difficult to settle, she had severe gastric reflux.
A dummy was a lifesaver for both of them, combined with a sling was the only way to stop DD3 overfeeding to the point of pained hysteria, (we got there a few times though.Sad)
Hope this helps you see the difference of what's normal and what's not.Smile

Have you asked the midwife about this, OP?

That's a lot of formula for a baby of this weight - needs checking out.
