How often does your 14week old wake to feed in the night?

Hi,

My baby is currently waking 3 times in the night to feed. Is this normal? It feels like a lot, she had gone down to only waking once and even occasionally sleeping through til around 11 weeks. Now she wakes up at least twice, sometimes more. I don't want to get in the habit of feeding her if she doesn't need it or over feeding her, any advice!

I mix feed her, she has been having 2 bottles of formula a day, which we upped to 3 bottles at the weekend. I breastfeed through the night. Do you think perhaps my supply isn't up to it now she's bigger and she's hungry and that's why she's waking more?

Thanks

dd is 12 weeks.
she goes to sleep between 7.30-8.30pm. we don't wake her for an 11pm feed.

she wakes for a feed around 12, 4, and 6. Sometimes 11, 2, 4 and 6.

last night every hour [bsad]. I tried settling her without a feed but no dice.

I think if you are unsure, perhaps try to settle her for 5-10mins without feeding, then feed if she won't settle?

My DS is 12 weeks and ebf. Wakes anywhere from twice to four times during the night (by night I mean between when I go to bed at about half 10 and when he gets up at 8). So for example last night I fed him at half 10 when I went up (dreamfeed), he woke at 2.15, 4.45 and 6.45. That was quite a good night, the night before was dreamfeed at 10.15 then up at 11.15, 2.15, 4.45 and 7. He has occasionally only woken twice (but not for ages, adn has never slept through.

Can't comment on the supply issue, but you will know that the formula may be impacting on that. Perhaps she wants to have the comfort of the bf as well as the feed, and as this is available at night thats when she wants it? Could also be a good old growth spurt of course!

Sorry not much help... but you aren't on your own! Grin

I know that compared to others she's by no means terrible. I guess I'm finding it harder as she used to only wake once, and she had slept through a handful of times, so we can't help but wonder why she's changed now! We have definitely gone through a growth spurt I think, but this has been a few weeks now and the things I have read about growth spurts say they last a few days, possibly a week!!

Maybe I should try a dreamfeed, that should see her through past the 11.30 feed surely?! Not been that keen on the idea before as feel like it's feeding when she's not necessarily hungry. I also don't know whether to bottle or breast feed a dreamfeed?!

Hmm.....

Babies change though - mine slept through a couple of times 9pm-5am before he was 8 weeks old, I thought I had a dream baby Grin By 8/10 weeks he was going to bed at 7pm, waking for a feed at 3am, 5am and up for the day at 7am.

At about 15/16 weeks I decided to do a dreamfeed to try to move the longest stretch of sleep to 11pm-7am, but it didn't work like that. My ds still woke at 3am, but now started waking for a feed at 11pm anyway so all that happened was I'd added an extra night feed. My 18 weeks he'd hit the 4 month sleep regression and was waking every hour or two at night!

By 5 months we had night feeds down to 7/11/3/7 and now at almost 6 months he often sleeps 11pm-6am (though sometimes wakes for an extra night feed still). Basically they change all the time! Just because a baby has slept through or in a particular pattern doesn't mean it will stay that way - they get bigger, their needs change, they need more milk feeds before they start solids etc.

I have dts, almost 3 months. One wakes once or twice a night, and has done consistently for weeks (before that it was 3/4 times). The other used to wake once (and once slept through entirely!), but is now up to 5/6 times. I have the same supply for both, so I know it's not my supply. Babies do change like Moon says.

I never managed dreamfeeds with ds1, haven't tried with the dts.

I know it's hard, but it will pass! ds1 used to wake every 40 minutes, but now sleeps beautifully.

Hi, just wanted to say you're not alone!

DD (13 weeks - 14 tomorrow)is EBF and slept 9pm-7am up till a week or so ago.. She's now waking twice, sometimes 3 times in the night. Last night woke at 2.30am and 6am before getting up at 7.30am. (sometimes will wake at 12.30am too)

She really seems to need the feed though and won't settle without it, although she settles straight away afterwards. I think I've had it so good for so long, it's now coming as a shock!

HV said it's all perfectly normal, she is just needing more calories as she's getting bigger.

I tried a dreamfeed at 10.30pm a couple of nights ago and she still woke at 2.30am so it made no difference to me.

I'm hoping she reverts back to giving me peaceful nights soon - spoilt, I am!!!

Both of mine still fed 2 to 3 hourly through the night at that age. I wont tell you how long it went on for. 'tis normal though.
