Help! 6mo introducing formula...

My DD is now 6mo and I want to start introducing formula. In the last 48 hours she has had 3 x 6oz bottles with breast milk for all other feeds.

She normally sleeps really well, but last night was incredibly fractious, waking every 45-60 minutes toddy and fuss until about 2am (normally sleeps soundly from 7pm). She then woke up at 5am screaming.

This continued for 4.5 hours. She started to drift off on me and then would wake screaming again as soon as I moved. I gave her ashtons powder (she has cut 3 teeth in the last four weeks) and then eventually calpol (on the off chance she was in pain) but nothing helped.

She finally slept but has now just done a HUGE poo, that is really hard/solid and a light grey colour (it's usually yellow).

Is this the formula? Is it normal? Is there something I'm doing wrong?

DS didn't have formula until he was nearly one, so I'm a little inexperienced.

Please help!

It's probably her system adjusting to the formula. Maybe you could start a bit slower, just swapping one bf for formula every few days? You don't want to risk mastitus from dropping too many feeds too quickly either.

Thanks for replying. I probably should have started slower, but is there any magic cure I could do now? Baby laxative etc... To make her more comfortable?

I genuinely didn't think it was a fast change but I guess it was too much Blush

A bit of diluted orange juice or a teaspoon of brown sugar in warm water can help.

Thanks

You could try giving some ready mix formula rather than powdered (at least for one of the feeds) as babies less likely to become constipated with ready mix as has slight laxative effect.
I also wonder if perhaps the little one was hungry and possibly takes more than 6oz per feed when breastfeeding? which is why started to wake at night?
Hope it soon settles down.
