Newborn will only latch onto right breast

My 10 day old only started breastfeeding on Wednesday due to needing to be treated for tongue tie. I was expressing before then and my supply seems to be better in my right breast and that is the only one he will latch onto at the moment.

I'm continuing to express on the left to keep the supply going but wondered if anyone had any advice to get him latched on the left breast?

Try the rugby ball hold

Tis can confuse them it to thinking they are on their preferred side

And try hand expressing a bit first so there is milk on the nipple and letdown might be quicker.

Try lots of skin to skin contact too. My DS2 had this problem too, he would only feed from the right! I just kept expressing and skin to skin and he finally twigged and away he went.
Good luck, I know how frustrating it is.

Have you tried putting him to it after he has fed from the other one first? My DS prefers the right and sometimes fights going on the left so I get him to relax by feeding from the right first. You could also try a football hold so he feels like he is feeding from the right.

Good tips thanks, I will try them as it is very frustrating! I find the rugby ball hold quite awkward but will try again to see if it works.

Zippy I had this problem with DC1. The rugby ball hold isn't as comfy but we only had to do it for some feeds, just to get him taking my right side.

You could always give one of the helplines a call to see if they have any other ideas Smile
