After reading on here about how little alcohol ends up in breastmilk, I've been having the odd glass of wine after DS has gone down for the night. I've been sticking to the "official" guidelines of 1-2 units, once or twice a week - but it occurs to me that this seems illogical. If I have a drink (as in one glass of wine, not loads) at 9pm but then don't feed DS until he wakes at 8am, the alcohol will surely be long gone from the milk - so do I still have to stick to the pregnancy recommendations, or could I drink a bit more, say one glass four or five nights a week (so even if one glass is 2 units, only 8-10 a week, below the 14 that non-pregnant women are allowed). I can see how the low limits are a good idea if your baby is waking through the night and feeding when there is possibly still booze in the milk, but with a baby who is a good sleeper and you can be reasonably sure you've got a good 10-11 hours or so before you'll be feeding again, is it safe to have a little bit more?
Disclaimer - I'm really not an alcoholic, just love a glass of wine and now that DS has decided to go to bed at 8pm rather than 3am I'd like to enjoy one in the evenings more than once a week if poss!
