Hi, I just wanted to add to the discussion on CBC. I had massive problems with breastfeeding and I had to start giving my LO the formula as he was just so dehydrated. An army of midwives and other breastfeeding experts was trying to get him to latch on but he was just getting more and more frustrated and I was worried he will develop a total aversion. I booked just one appointment with Clare Byam Cook and she manged to get him to latch on within 30 seconds! My husband was sceptical prior to the visit but when he saw that he could only say one word: "magic"... more importantly she gave me tips on how to do the same thing at home. I went home and started breast feeding straight away. I cannot express how grateful I am and how impressed with her knowledge and experience. She basically managed to turn my motherhood experience from an express journey to PND to a total bliss. Money best spent.

Interesting anecdotes from all these first time posters.

It is worth noting that there will always be some infants that manage to bf and thrive despite terribly, inaccurate advice.

However, research (proper peer-reviewed research) teaches us a few facts about bf which are worth noting. That mothers and babies manage to feed better and longer when they are able to learn to latch correctly, not man-handled; that milk supply is based on a demand-supply relationship and feeding your baby on cue sets you up for producing enough milk long term; that giving formula has no effect on sleep (on a population basis); that the gut isn't fully sealed until around 6 months; that prolactin levels are highest in the early hours of the morning and feeding then improves supply; that bf protects against SIDS etc, etc, etc

CBC is not qualified in breastfeeding and has not practise as a MW in DECADES her advice is based on anecdote and is contrary to the recommendations by international bodies.

By all means, feel free to pay her, if that is what you want, but go in with your eyes wide open and know what you're getting. If it is accurate, up-to-date information, it ain't it.

Welcome to MN MeerkatsMum. What an interesting thread to bump.

TimeWasting · 30/07/2011 23:51

If CBC has this magic technique that no one else has, why can't she teach midwives etc. how to do it?
I couldn't give money to someone with-holding that kind of knowledge, it's unethical.

my worry here is that the op feels they have to seek professional advice outside of their healthboard. Surely we should have a great support network for mums in pregnancy and post-natally. In Scotland we have a great breastfeeding support network which is stupidly losing its gov funding. We obv need more of this, not less. Good luck to op with feeding, hope you manage the bf for as long as possible. I think its bloody brilliant.
