That was a definite scream at the tv moment watching that ruby

Oh I was so angry, I rung dp at work and started ranting down the phone at him. (he was in a meeting so not too impressed)

You know whats so funny here - anyone who has written a book about childbirth/child rearing is satan.

I just don't get it, I didn't discover mn until dd was 2, if I hadn't read some books I wouldn't have had a clue. Just because you all know it all doesn't mean a new mum does. Sheesh.

BTW - any chance you are knocked up reality? Grin

There are loads of good books about childcare!

A "breastfeeding counsellor" advocating formula feeds and weaning a 12lb baby seems a bit odd though.

RubyBuckleberry · 18/01/2011 21:52

'anyone who has written a book about childbirth/child rearing is satan'

not really figgyrolls - loads of good books out there...

bronze · 18/01/2011 22:00

I seem to remember reading a certain mumsnet on babies kept me sane 7 years ago in the middle of the night. It was co written by lots and lots of lovely people

Figgyrolls · 18/01/2011 22:26

Yes but what I am saying is that if you have no experience whatsoever you go with what is recommended to you otherwise going into waterstones and trying to choose one is pretty bloody scary, so you might choose one that your friends have chosen to read and found useful - especially pre birth.

Equally now I know what to read and what not to bother - within each book, some have great advice and some interesting Grin ways of doing things but if you use it as a pointer then things can be great.

Interestingly am not sticking up for CBC or any of them, read the cbc book prior to dd (3) birth, thought it was quite useful but i also went to the nct bf councellor. Luckily I found bf to be pretty easy, thought I would read it prior to ds (5 months) I did think what a lot of bollocks Grin. Infact the only thing I found vaguely useful was the picture of latching on Hmm.

Equally sometimes I turn to Gina and then run very fast in the other direction screaming, equally do the same for the baby whisperer.

Am I allowed to say am currently foraging through Annabel karmels 100 puree's & 100 finger foods to get some ideas for ds as am totally uninspired for some weaning ideas.

What scares me is my friend who uses GF like a bible and recommended cbc. (Didn't bf as her dh didn't like it Angry) If she recommends a book to me I steer clear. Am now much more savvy and read all the reviews then double check on mn. However I am 3.5 years down the line now........and have found mn! (Accidentally btw - was looking for nm to find local "things to do" and discovered the jackpot instead Grin) All I am saying is be gentle on the innocent, just incase they are innocent!

Figgyrolls · 18/01/2011 22:30

reality super congrats!

PenguinArmy · 19/01/2011 03:31

There are many books recommended by MNers. There are also many recommendations for people to seek support in real life through cafe's, groups, phone lines and private counsellors or consultants.

dietcokes · 19/01/2011 04:08

If she is that fabulous OP why dont you ask your friend for her number?

mrsgordonfreeman · 19/01/2011 09:35

I am a peer supporter and was wondering about further training as a counsellor.

But I would never feel comfortable charging for the advice I give.

And, I hope, my advice is more evidence based and less batty than CBC's and her parade of sock puppets.

bellylicious · 19/01/2011 10:32

if i had the money to spend on a bf councellor then i would be googling for more local and probably better trained people, cbc has undoudtedly proved herself as an inadequate source of information for breastfeeding pairs

spend your hard earned cash else where Smile

5DollarShake · 19/01/2011 10:44

Figgyrolls - you speak as if the 1000s and 1000s of people who popst on MN speak with one voice. Confused. Have you witnessed the bun fights which go on over any given topic? Some people love GF, some hate her, some swear by the BW, others don't - you name it, opinions vary as widely as its members.

You know, some of us have even taken the same approach as you - dipping in and out of all sorts of books and approaches, getting some online and real life advice and have come to our own conclusions. :)

DanceInTheDark · 19/01/2011 12:24

Pussycat5

CBC is just the current public "face" of breastfeeding. There are many BF counsellors, some of whom charge, and some who don't. If you are struggling you can contact your MW or HV or ring the number that TikTok mentioned above.

Also worth remembering that just because CBC is 'noted' doesn't mean she will work for you.

RubyBuckleberry · 19/01/2011 12:42

'CBC is just the current public "face" of breastfeeding.' how frightening?!

clearly we need to give breastfeeding a makeover like these people are doing in New York/USA great t shirts btw Grin

Figgyrolls · 19/01/2011 13:00

5dollarshake no don't worry don't think everyone has one voice at all that is why I lurve mn Grin, but I do remember how totally and utterlya bloody terrifying bit that was the last month of pg wondering how the hell I was going to have a baby and what I was going to do with it Hmm I did seriously wonder if I had made some sort of serious error by getting knocked up Grin, in my 30's with a much awaited for baby! And those books that were suggested to me (as hadn't found mn and all my family have older children now) were the only advice I got. Wish I hadn't listened and spent money on them as the only book that I really find useful is the 'what to expect' as a dip in sort of encyclopedia of bits and bobs, others just frankly terrify me. Am still waiting for the perfect manual as to how the little buggers work [hint emoticon]. DD was a perfect little thing, slept through from 9 weeks blah blah, ds 5 months no more than 4 hours sleep....................I am deprived and that is why I want a PERFECT manual. Grin.

Also it might just be that I only ever look at those threads that have Gina bashing/bw bashing etc etc because of the fun they can be to read [evil emoticon] Grin.

I now have my pre mn and post mn life, and have a far reaching amount of knowledge and encyclopedia 24 hrs a day 365 days a year and it is a bit of comfort blanket - before it was just referring to GF/BW/AK/CBC as they were the books I had - ha ha but not any more!

Figgyrolls · 19/01/2011 13:03

What I was trying to get at was that all those "how you should work babies" books tend to make me feel massively inadequate - which I know now but didn't before iyswim, and my group of "friends" all used the same manuals so if you weren't doing it that way you were wrong Hmm, peer pressure is a bastard! I now know better, my way is usually the right way Grin! So can kind of see why the op posted (if not an advert - although iirc her number is in the back of her book Confused)

RubyBuckleberry · 19/01/2011 13:08

everything you are saying figgyrolls make perfect sense. take what you need from the books and all that...

i actually read the BW and followed her BF advice at first cos i didn't have a clue. i agree mn much better Grin

bubbahubba · 19/01/2011 22:02

if you are going to pay, why don't you pay for a QUALIFIED Lactation Consultant?
CBC is NOT qualified at all!

Sparklyeuropeep · 22/01/2011 21:38

CBC is awesome-I used her & she solved my prob in minutes. Christine hill will defo give u her number - good luck!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/01/2011 21:48

That's great for you Sparkly but I think a few of us on here are wondering why the OP didn't just ask her friend for the details, and why she wants to pay at all and why, if she does want to pay she wouldn't pay someone who was qualified afterall I wouldn't employ a plumber who hadn't had any training.

chipmonkey · 22/01/2011 22:13

Oh, now all this has given me a fab idea.....!

chipmonkeyNamechange · 22/01/2011 22:17

Does anyone know of a good optometrist. I need an eye test.
