getting milk supply going

My DS was born via EMCS on late Friday night and is in NICU for the time being. I managed to express a good amount of colostrum yesterday, not so much today. I understand I should have been pumping more often than I have been, am at the pump as I type (one handed!) and aim to pump every couple of hours. I need advice and/or encouragement, is my plan ok or is there more I can do until my milk comes in?

I am sure you are doing fine, and you might be a bit shocked when your milk does come in as you could become quite engorged about day 4/5. Remember that newborns feed often but actually only consume a relatively small amount of milk at each feed. As long as you are stimulating your milk supply it should be fine. I found fenugreek tablets to be good at helping to boost my supply if at times it seemed a little low and the doctor can prescribe tablets to do similar if absolutely necessary. Good luck with your lovely baby and the feeding.x

Pumping 2 hourly is prob not necessary - 8-10 times in 24 hours is the usual. That's hard enough work!

Hope things go well for you.

Thanks for the replies!

The NICU has recommended that I pop in for kangaroo care, and I'll try not to be too anxious as the colostrum is indeed coming. Really trying not to be anxious about everything, but easier said than done :)
