I thought breastfed babies rarely get sick!

After my pro formula, anti breastfeeding cousin kept telling me I was strange and crazy for breastfeeding my baby... i had to come at her giving all these reasons why breastfeeding is great..

I kept going on about how formula doesnt have antibodies.. and now my baby has pneumonia! I also just stopped breastfeeding, baby is 10 months...and now I am feeling so guilty that I should have continued

has anyone else's breast baby gotten sick?

Sorry to hear your baby has pneumonia. That must be very scary. Hope s/he recovers soon.

I'm not really sure what to say in response to your question about whether b/f babies get sick? Err, of course they can. What an odd thing to ask.

Over whole populations breastfed babies get far fewer infectious diseases in the first year of life than those fed formula milk. But it isn't a panacea and of course some breastfed babies will still get ill.

Your poor baby, pneumonia must be horrible for you both. But she might have got more diseases or caught them earlier if you had not breastfed her. Or she might not and you've just been very unlucky.

If your cousin is really nasty enough to sneer at you for breastfeeding when your baby is poorly you should just tell her where to go.

I hope your baby feels better soon.

My friends DD was hospitalised with pnuemonia when she was 2 weeks old, she was exclusively bf. It happens. The risks are reduced with breastfeeding, not eradicated. Don't feel guilty. Hope your baby gets better soon x

They tend to get sick less often and have easier time when they do get sick but it's not a rule.

DD is still bf and at 23 mo just had her first cold few weeks ago. Having said that, she's not in nursery and so has limited contact with other kids. I fully expect her to get all the bugs running when she goes.

Hope your baby's ok.

i just cant but help thinking she git it just as I was winding down the breastfeeding...

DD3 has had bronchiolitis 8 (possibly 7 the Drs they like to argue over diagnoses) times this year and was exc.bf to 26 weeks, she is now bfing at 15m with food too.

Bf babies get sick - otherwise the first time a baby was introduced to food/formula we would do it in a hospital in a hermetically sealed bubble where baby would stay!

It's just bad luck (and possibly genetics) that some babies get ill. You just have to reassure yourself you did all you could to prevent illness. Short of that hermetically sealed bubble of course Wink

Hope your daughter gets better soon.

My ds2 is 17weeks and EBF and was in hospital last week with Bronchiolitis.

I'm not surprised tbh, He was bound to catch something off his 21 month old brother who had a cold, chest and throat infection that wouldn't clear without 2 courses of anti-biotics.

he did get over it fairly quickly though and I think BF helped with his quick recovery.

Hope your daughter gets better soon.

Sorry to hear your baby is sick. however your cousons attitude i disgusting i found this a lot when i breastfed, all the judgemental ff mothers saying stuff. you should turn it back on them and see how they like it x
