How much weight can I lose and not affect BFing?

Wondering really... Aiming for 3lb weight loss a week through cutting back on food and upping exercise. I put on 3 stone during pregnancy Blush and none of it has shifted during first 11 weeks of BFing so hence now making effort. But could I impact supply/milk quality/DS's growth etc?

A sensible weight loss is 1-2lbs a week (after that you're losing lean tissue not fat). That's true for EVERYBODY.

Eating sensible, healthy food and getting some exercise is fine.

Diet only affects milk in very extreme circumstances like serious malnutrition.

Congratulations and it's only been 11 weeks!

Okay, I'll revise my target a bit then, as it's the lard I want to lose! (Damn the pain au chocolat weakness cravings) I'm still in my maternity clothes as nothing else fits!

Me too! I'm trying to cut out snacks and biscuits but eat normal sensible meals. I've eaten like a trog over Christmas and my weight has stayed stable, just a stone heavier than I was before DD was born 11 weeks ago, so I'm hoping it will start to come off, but I'm also wary of affecting my milk supply.

I'm still in maternity jeans too Blush!!

I mean a stone heavier than I was before I was pregnant, not before she was born!! trying to type while watching tv!

I went to Weightwatchers when I was b/feeding and found it very helpful - they were very supportive and had lots of healthy, sensible advice - managed to lose about 2lbs a week (which I put on after I stopped breastfeeding Grin) - 10 years later I am still struggling with my weight !!

I was still in my maternity clothes after 11 weeks, I think it's fairly normal! I've heard that Weightwatchers gives you an extra point or so to spend if you are BF but I've never been so I don't know how true this is.

3lbs a week is a lot.... I was 3 stone overweight, and started when DS2 was 6 months old. I did stop BFing soon after than as I went back to work. I went down to 1200 calories a day plus loads of exercise and weight loss has been 2lbs a week, to loose 3lbs I would have had to starve myself. 14 weeks later I have lost 2 stone.

I was bfing a 5 month old when I went to ss and was on a 1500ish calorie a day diet. Lost weight and kept going for about another 8 months. The weight fell off me Grin Put it all back on now, though Sad

Mssoul · 13/01/2011 23:03

Sorry ss is Scottish slimmers Grin

See calories calculator:

www.calculator.net/calorie-calculator.html

If I wanted to loose 2lbs week I'd need to only eat 832 calories a day. Obviously BFing uses up perhaps 500 calories a day, but I would think that less than 1500-1800 calories a day wouldn't be ideal with a baby at this age.

What SOH said.

I'd recommend a 99th baby who only naps in a sling for rapid weight loss. Sadly I've put it all (and more) on again since.

11 weeks is early days yet.
