I have mastitus :( woke up yesterday with bad headache, fever, sore breast...it later got much more painful, aching joints etc. Went to emergency drs and he gave me antibiotics...still feel a bit weak today and breast is still sore.

I'm not sure why i got it,i think its becuse i express sometimes but sometimes i dont.(maybe i should do it everyday?). Does anyone know how i can make sure (or at least try) to not get it again? i usually express 1 bottle a day, if i use it i express again later but usually i dont use it and it gets thrown away (if i dont use it i dont express later) (only use the expressed bottle if we go out and theres no where to breastfeed). Any advice?

I had mastitis with both my boys. I really feel for you. Mine always came when I wasn't consistant so I would say, always breast feed or always express at a certain time. Try not to miss expressing if you do do it.

Thinking of you. Hope that you soon feel better

I cannot recommend phytolacca highly enough. It's a homeopathic rememdy which was recommended to me and you can get it from health food shops. IT's worth getting some to put in your change bag and take at the nearest sign of mastitis. I had mastitis in week 2 which I think was a result of oversupply and baby just not emptying breast - it happened on exactly the same day as when I had my DD. I started again with it on Thursday - tender breasts and then the flu set in. I thought I was too late but started taking these tablets together with lots of ibuprofen and paracetomol and that night the fever was under control. I fed lots from the side with the redness and massaged and two days later it had gone.

It doesn't help with why you got it but will help if you get it again. They say some women are just prone to it but can be badly fitting bra, if you go for longer than normal without feeding or if you use your fingers to shape your breast and don't take them away during feed.

It's horrid - hope you feel better soon.

Well i'm going to try and express about 11 everyday, if i use that milk then i'll express again at tea time,if i dont i wont. I think maybe its because i didnt express a couple of days ago then baby didnt feed as much as normal the day after so maybe that combined caused it. I'll try and get some phytolacca as i def dont want this again.

pinkyp - you don't need to throw the milk out if you don't use it that day.

Expressed breast milk will keep for up to 8 days in a fridge (keep it at the back of the fridge at the bottom not in the door) and up to 6 months in a

I have had mastitus twice and it is so horrid. I got it as I was a bit run down. When you start to feel better due to the antibiotics still take it easy as it can take a really long time to get over it.

Drink plenty, warm compress on your sore breasts and keep feeding.

i would truth but i have no idea to go about this? i do waste alot so its a shame really.

My other breast is feeling sore today now :( and its getting even more painful to feed, i thought it'd be easing up now?

The website for the UK Assoc. of Milk Banks is here.

On the mastitis front have you tried hot flannels on your breasts? That can help sometimes as can taking ibuprofen - assuming of course you can normally take it.
