Vegetarian Formula???

Crystylline · 02/01/2011 12:20

I'm 8 months pregnant and just looking into options/alternatives in case I have problems or can't breastfeed.

It seems that there are precious few options for vegetarian formula available: all of the main brands contain fish or fish derivatives and HIPP Organic is no longer vege friendly either.

I've been reading about the problems with Soya based milk and the Vegetarian Society advises not to use unless recommended by the GP.

So... does anyone have any ideas as to brands available?

I'm really hoping I'll be able to breastfeed, but the idea of having to supplement my baby's diet with non-vegetarian food is disturbing - why is it even remotely necessary to put fish in baby milk?

im a vege too (so are my dc's and my dp.

i have never found an ethical, vegetarian formula.i have been able to bf both dc's,i fed dd for 18months and intend to do the same with ds(4mo)
the only thing we would have considered is goats milk formula...but we never looked into it properly,as we had no need in the end.

im more than happy for you to pm me if you feel like bfing is to hard, physically or emotionaly,or you need help with positioning, mastitus etc,

tbh i think most of it envolves, try, try, try again!
if you are determined, you are more than likey to be able to.

good luck!Grin

some of the sma formulas are vegetarian, including Sma extra hungry which is suitable from birth & their follow on milk - both widely available - see their website.

BTW - the goats milk formula can't be sold in shops in the UK as currently advise is that its not suitable for infants, there is another thread on this from around a week ago.

The fish is the long chain fatty acids from oily fish but apparently SMA use instead marine algae.

If either of you are interested, I'm going to sell my 4 unopened boxes of Holle stage 1 - I paid over £30, but willing to take £20 inc p&p (unless you live near Norwich to save on postage). PM me if you're interested.
