Heat Magazine - pathetic coverage of BF

This is not a debate whether or not Natalie Cassidy should be breastfeeding or not. Nor is it actually any of our business or perhaps interest.

However have a look at this - awful coverage from Heat Sad

For me, it's really the tone of bf being something 'ick' and to feel nauseated by whilst eating lunch etc. Yes, yes, it's Heat but what a horrible way to write... glad I don't read it if it's all like that. Revolting...

I particularly loathed liked this bit

'we?ll hold our hands up and admit that it?s a real issue that affects a heck of a lot of us new mums'

Does this mean that the 'article' was written by a new mum Shock! It's the Mother&Baby thing all over againWink

All in all it sounds like it was written by a 15y/o boy for Viz not an adult writing for a celeb gossip mag. Someone has isshoos me thinks.......

StealthPolarBear · 31/12/2010 07:32

pink who is doing that? Where have you been flamed?

porcamiseria · 31/12/2010 09:59

agree this is shite, shame on Heat assume written by a bloke

BUT , newflash, NOT EVERYONE CAN EASILY BREASTFEED

this myth that everyone can BF if they are helped and informed is utter tripe, why do we think wetnurses existed?

I have been very lucky with BF, but I would never dare assume that people who stop were misinformed, sometimes the milk does dry up, end of, I have seen this happen with a friend and she was feeding hourly!

so maybe, just maybe, Natalies milk DID run out

ISNT · 31/12/2010 10:09

I've not really seen heat before, that article was horrible.

pinkyp · 31/12/2010 10:34

OP said wether or not natalie bf or ff was irrelivant, it wasnt about having a debate. It was how the article had be wrote porcamiseria.

peppapighastakenovermylife · 31/12/2010 13:06

Well one reason wet nurses actually existed was for the rich upper classes to farm out infant feeding so the woman could get pregnant again but I digress.

FFS, I deliberately stated at the top of my OP that this was not about whether she could breastfeed or not, whether she chose to or not and whether it was actually any of our business whatsoever - it is the wording of the post by Heat, calling it bitty, gross etc.

Nowhere have we criticised formula feeding. I give up.

Expressing never worked well for me, to get a nice big bottle would have to express 2oz each morning for several days.

I think its sad she wasn't given good information and worse that she's communicating her lack of knowledge to others.

However some women don't have enough milk, whatever they to, this could be caused by hormonal issues.

But other times it might be caused by behaaviour eg not letting the baby feed on demand for as long as they want, or pumping rather than direct feeding.

MumNWLondon · 31/12/2010 14:23

FWIW my milk did dry up when I went back to work. Was only feeding twice a day, and not pumping. DS2 wasn't prepared to feed for more than 5 mins (or sometimes, even pnly 2 minutes) on each side at each feed (after that milk was too slow), 20 mins of feeding a day wasn't enough to keep up the supply.

porcamiseria · 31/12/2010 14:44

i know !!!! i agree with OP

but loads of people postred that NC was not helped/ill informed and I replied to them

but agree Heat was shite, and to use bitty, fuck right off

blackeyedsusan · 31/12/2010 16:48

oooo now I want to take my saggy 40 year (+) boobs down to heat magazine hq and sit blatently feeding ds (2 1/2) and really make them go ewwww.

strandednomore · 31/12/2010 16:55

OP - I totally agree with you and understand what you are saying. This isn't about Natalie Cassidy at all - at the end of the day it's her decision whether to carry on bf'ing or not and she might just be using the "drying up" as an excuse to stop.

It's the way breastfeeding is portrayed in Heat that is the problem here. And whatever other's say, Heat is a very popular, very influential and very widely-read magazine.

It reminds me of the daughter of a colleague of mine, who was pregnant at the same time as me. She was about 21 years old and apparently when her mother asked her if she was going to breastfeed she said "ewww, no way! How disgusting!". These are the people who are reading Heat.

Exactly stranded, is the commentary not what she is doing.

pink4ever, for goodness sake take that chip off your shoulder

BaggedandTagged · 02/01/2011 09:01

The tone of the article is fucking disgraceful but then Heat is written for those with a subnormal IQ- I know this because how could they get away with writing the same article about Jordan every issue unless the readership can't remember having read it the previous week?

Therefore, our fear should not be that Heat readers choose not to bf, but that they might actually breed in the first place.

porca she says in the article (if we can believe ANYTHING that is printed in Heat Wink

?I was expressing and getting, like, half an ounce. There was just nothing there. My milk had just finished.?

The amount that a woman can express is a very poor indicator of how much milk is available to the baby. The fact that NC didn't know that indicates that she was ill-informed and poorly supported.

I don't disagree and certainly didn't write that women always have enough milk.

But sometimes they do have enough but their confidence is eroded and their supply diminished by someone well-meaning suggesting a 'top-up feed' and suddenly they do begin to have a problem with supply. A lot of the problems (but by no means all) that people have with breastfeeding could be ameliorated if there was better information and support.
