What do you have for you?

Is it definitely thrush in her mouth and not milk residue coating her tongue?

7 day dose of fluconazole for you. will prevent you giving it back to her and might even help clear it up in your dd. Will link to bfn. It is ok to take fluconazole when bf.

Just looked at the packet i was prescribed - the dosage is 50mg capsule for 7 days.

This is the second time we've had it and the first time it took ages to go, faffing with Nystatin, Canesten Cream and Daktarin Cream and Oral gel before finally being prescribed fluconazole. Second time around just asked for the Fluconazole - much more effective.

Daktarin gel is no good for nipples, it's designed for use in the mouth not on the skin - I had the same problem at first too! You need clotrimazole cream (canestan) for your nipples.

Fluconazole will get rid of the thrush if it's in your breast tissue/ducts but if it's just the nipple surface (sore or itchy nipples) the cream might be enough.

No its not antibiotics but an antifungal medication. www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a690002.html

My drs are rubbish.

Doctor said i only needed daktarin for us both, will march back there to get more treatment this week.

i tried the daktarin cream for nips, and that made them worse, so not sure what i need?

DD still has white thrush in mouth. (on the side)
I have soreish nips but seem to be less sore than earlier this week.
the pain from breast tissue seems to be a bit better too so not sure...

maybe keep doing daktarin on DD, and what for me?

I had the same - first HV I saw said just to put the gel on my nips but after two weeks no improvement. Went back and saw another HV and she said the oral gel is no good for skin and got me the canestan cream. You can buy the canestan cream (clotrimazole 1%) in a chemist, it's the same cream you use for vaginal thrush. Just put it on after a feed and wipe off after the next feed.

The daktarin gel was pretty good in clearing up DS's mouth, but you need to use it four times a day and really smear it all round their mouths. We managed to shift the thrush from his mouth but then he got a thrush nappy rash - took about 8 weeks to fully get rid!

If you have breast pain though you need to be prescribed the fluconazole. The clotrimazole cream will only treat the nipple soreness/itching.

Search on the Breastfeeding Network website for their excellent leaflet on treating thrush - print it out to show to your GP too.

The breast pain has wore off now, its just thrush in DD's mouth and pinky nips... i'm sure knowing my luck the soreness will cmoe back!

will check at the Gp or just get canesten for me and keep using daktarin on DD mouth....

She hasn't had nappy rash yet (fingers crossed) it doesnt bother her either (her mouth) i just want it gone for her sake and for feeding.

The latest recommendation is for fluconazole 100mg bd for at least two weeks, but until symptoms all gone. You can get daktarin cream for your nipples (this is miconazole and works better than canesten for nipple thrush).

gummymum · 30/12/2010 18:34

Sorry, bd means twice daily!
