Strange breast pains - possibly thrush?

I am BFing DS (dc2) who is now 18 days old. He doesn't have a great latch Anyway but I can tolerate the nipple pain and he can only latch on the right as I have an inverted nipple on left so I express that side most of the time when he's not able to get on.
Question is I get horrible pain on left and now developing in right as well at the end of a feed, almost feels like it itches inside my breast and as he is draining the breast it is as if he is sucking on a straw so hard it has gone flat if you get my meaning!! It gets really painful and I have to take him off! I asked MW but she has no idea - no signs of mastitis so could this be thrush - DS mouth seems clear.

Do you know why you have an inverted nipple? Have you tried extracting it to feed from it? I know it's not what you asked but I am looking at the latch problem as a whole. Did you ask your MW about thrush or did you just think about it after she'd left?

It could be - I didnt realise my baby had thrush, but it was noticed as a white coating on his tongue ( I thought it was just milk after a feed). Have you got a breast feeding drop in clinic near you that you could go to?

Have tried pumping to get nipple out as it's only thing that really works, tried a shield with bf specialist but he wouldn't latch at all on that. My l breast has to be almost empty before he can get a latch at all which seems worse as I have to take him off so soon. Didn't suggest thrush to MW as only thought about it after have HV on thirsday so can ask then. No bf cafe close to me - would need to get a lift.

I had thrush (while expressing), it was very painful - like needles. I had small blisters all over my nipples and the nipples got clogged up with milk, kind of crusty. Nice hey!

The GP was able to diagnose it immediately although I had already worked out what it was. Can you get to an out of hours GP?

Gp difficult but possible if it is thrush - thought I would ask wisdom of mn first!!

FWIW if it is thrush, I was given Fucidin cream and it cleared it up really quickly. Wish I had gone sooner - I didn't realise what it was and it would have saved me a world of pain.

Hope you get it sorted anyway.

Did the topical cream work on the pain inside the breasts as well? Wil I need tablets for that? Am going to phone BFing nurse this am

Yeah it did, but the pain inside the breasts was from the act of expressing, so the pressure etc on the nipple itself. Although this lasted a lot longer than the actual expressing - but it sounds like it could be something else? As with thrush, its all on the nipple - or do you think that you have in the milk ducts as well? Sounds like you do need to see someone to get it diagnosed properly.

For further info if anyone else has this local pharmacist happy to sell over the counter the correct treatment as happy I had self diagnosed correctly from info leaflet on breastfeeding network. Com as suggested by BFing support worker.
Now fully creamed up as is DS so BFing can continue! Grin
