Preferring one side to the other...different needs?

This is more of a musing that anything. I have noticed recently that DS2 (4 months old) has very strong preferences for one side or the other at certain times - but this also changes from side to side.

For example he will cry for milk and I will offer him the left side. He will flat out refuse it - get near it, open his mouth but refuse to latch. I give him the right...and he happily feeds.

The other two had a favourite side - but DS2 changes from side to side - one day he will refuse the left, the next the right. Sometimes he will only have the side he had last time, sometimes only the other side.

Anyone else noticed this? I am wondering sometimes if it depends on his needs. Perhaps if he is really thirsty he wants a fast let down and foremilk and somehow knows what side he was on last - scent perhaps?

Probably over thinking this...just find it interesting (but not when he is screeching at me for offering the wrong side!)
