Afterpains while bf - how long do they last??

They are real buggers second-time round. Sad DS2 is 2 days old and I am really suffering. Am already on volterol and paracetomol for perineum, muscle aches etc.

At least it's another way I can tell I've got a good latch though, as they are much more intense when he's latched on well! Grin

I think by memory they started to really fade after about 2-3 days.

I had a drug-free labour (TENS only, then water for the last few hours - not even G&A) yet was on co-codamol for the afterpains!!! So I really sympathise.

I heard that they get worse with every baby :(

But congratulations!

Oh they are awful aren't they! Mine lasted a few days, 4 or 5? Was like being in labour again....

3 or 4 days - none first child, but hideous for second. nurofen!!!!

MumNWLondon · 23/12/2010 14:28

I didn't have with first, it was painful with number 2 and worse than contractions while giving birth with number 3 (had easy birth though). Told midwifes and said labour gets easier each time and afterpains get worse.

Fine to take nurofen, which did help. Before that I was crying and telling DH I just couldn't feed him for more than 2 mins at a time as it hurt too much (and that was with paracetamol). I didn't take co-codamol as I took that with DS1 (DC2) for after pains and ended up totally constipated.

But only lasted 3-4 days.
