I'm having some trouble feeding dd2 at the moment. She is 2 and her latch has suddenly becoming very poor and she is using her teeth a bit.

I'm trying to get her to stop but my nipples are suffering. The cold is making is much worse!

Changing temperatures are causing me agony.

Any advice?

Thanks

Lansinoh

Try to adjust her latch as much as possible

Is one side worse than the other?

Try and get her to open her mouth wide like a lion, and show her what you mean. At 2 she shoud be able to understand when you explain to her that mummies nipples are a bit sore and could she make a big mouth please?

Thanks. Forgot about the Lansinoh.

It's like she has forgotton how to latch properly. Regardless of how many times I try to adjust the latch it is the same. She even opens her mouth really wide for me before a feed as I've said it to her so often.

Definitely using her teeth a lot. Ouch!

I'd love to stop breastfeeding but despite the bad latch she is still very enthusiastic.

cross post with you thebreastmilksonme

We have been doing the big mouth. Not helping at the moment.

A lot of the problem is that she mostly feeds to sleep or in the night so it is difficult to explain to her when she is not even awake.

Hmm it's a tricky one, su. Have you tried removing her by breaking the suction everytime you feel she is getting lazy?

You could wean her off the night feeds and the evening one and just feed her in the morning and during the day if that is practical?

As it happens I have every sympathy for you as I am breastfeeding my 27mth old and I am finding it so sore but that is due more to the pregnancy hormones than a poor latch in our case. He would love a feed in the evening but I can't let him have more than one feed a day atm due to the soreness and he reluctantly puts up with it!

Have tried that but she is a little monkey. If I try to break the latch before she is ready she holds on with her teeth!

Push her into your boob

It will make her unlatch

rubyslippers · 22/12/2010 20:42

And ouch at holding on with her teeth
