constipation in formula fed baby

daisystone · 16/12/2010 20:27

My baby is currently in distress as is majorly constipated and is trying her hardest to poo. This hasn't happened before and I don't know what to do to help her get it out.

We feed her SMA and recently have been administering Infacol.

Could either of these be causing it??

Please help as she is in major distress now and we really don't know how to help her.

How old is she?

Lulumaam · 16/12/2010 20:29

when did she last poo?

daisystone · 16/12/2010 20:32

She is two weeks and last pooed two days ago and the poo last time was the consistency of dairlylea

Now it is rock solid

the poo that has come out is so so hard and we can see red in it that must be blood.

Has she always been on formula or did you switch recently? Can you see your HV or GP tomorrow?

Poor baby and poor you, sounds very distressing.

daisystone · 16/12/2010 20:37

She has had formula for the last week and hads been fine.

Can't get through to HV now. Think I should call emergency doctor

Yes, I would. Get her seen tonight. Hope she's feeling better soon.

missmoopy · 16/12/2010 20:45

Give her some cooled boiled water and that should help quite quickly to loosen stool. Myy dd was a very constipated baby, so we gave her a small bottle of water daily. That and rubbing a small amount of vaseline around her bum. The joys of parenting eh!?

Jojay · 16/12/2010 20:48

I think SMA is known for bunging up babies too, so you may want to consider switching formula once you're over this immediate hurdle.

Squitten · 16/12/2010 20:48

DS1 started off on SMA and also became painfully constipated after a short while. Our midwife at the time recommended changing to Aptamil as it's a thinner milk and he soon recovered.

Definitely get her seen asap

Chrysanthemum5 · 16/12/2010 20:50

DD was very constipated on sma hv refused to offer any advice because she said it was the formula. Anyway dh ended up calling sma. They said to offer cooled boiled water and to make sure we were using sma gold not White as the White is harder to digest. Hope you get it sorted

ABudafulSightWereHappyTonight · 16/12/2010 20:57

Had the same with DS on Aptamil. Doc recommended adding an extra ounce of water to each bottle. I know they say you should never tamper with the amounts but adding the extra water is ok. I did it all the time he was on formula. My sisters have done it too.

thanks for the advice everyone. We tried calling the emergency doctor last night which means calling the normal surgery and the line then connecting through to the out of hours service. Every time we called them, the line just cut out after a recorded message saying if you held the line they would put you through. Tried this about ten times and it wouldn't connect. Cannot believe this! I was so angry that it just kept cutting out.

As had no one else to call (HV works 9-5 and midwife works part time), we put a tiny amount of cooled boiled water in her nightime bottles and this morning at 6.00am, she had done a much looser stickier poo.

Thank God! I will call the HV later to discuss, but thanks for the advice as I think the water helped. Smile

I was going to say switch from sma too.
Dd1 had terrible problems on it as did several friends babies.
Best one IMO is aptamil.

missmoopy · 17/12/2010 13:56

Once we switched to HIPP Organic dd was much less constipated. And I ALWAYS added 50ml extra water to her bottles when she was a baby.

My son recently is facing a very serious constipation problem for a week i think. Any good recommendation to solve this problem? So woorrrryyyyyyyyy about his health status.

MigGril · 06/04/2015 12:07

You should be really careful about giving to much pain water to such as young baby it can cause serious problems. Not so much when they get bigger. Other things to try, switching formula they are all very much the same but some babies seem to struggle with digesting some brands. Also for some reason the ready made cartoons seem to be better at not casuing this problem. So you can try adding in one of those.

But please do be careful with pain water. As your baby is so young giving it on a regular basis is not a good solution.

MigGril · 06/04/2015 12:11

ash just realised you've reacted an old thread. How old is your son? How is he fed? It's his poo hard?

Madison66 · 07/04/2015 18:34

The baby at three weeks old has not done a poo for more than a week. Had to use some formula bottles as I had bad back. What should I do? Am breast feeding again.

ebingche · 08/04/2015 09:42

@ashleycheng1314

There's alot remedies out there is effective in solving LO constipation probs. but then if u're looking for long term solution to this, i suggest u try looking for milk formula with an ingredient inside call Pre-biotics which is crucial for children's constipation prevention.

adraylay · 08/04/2015 12:06

Try to let your child to move as much as they can.. this will help them to avoid constipation.. and try to reduce solid food too.. cos maybe their digestive system can't get used to it yet so will have constipation.

kellycheong48 · 10/04/2015 03:31

My neighbour shared with me that she used Mamil formula, her son constipation problem disappear. It contains high pre-biotics which help on constipation problem. And also, Mamil does not contains Sugar and high DHA which good to ur child. Try to change to Mamil for a week, i hope it will help you.

ashleycheng1314 · 10/04/2015 03:43
