Please reassure me

Ds 9 months has had a nasty tummy bug for two days. His temp spiked to 40.1 in the night so we called ooh and gp said keep him hydrated and just ride it out.

I now have it and can't keep anything down. I am bf so am worried that I'll have sufficient milk to support ds while he is poorly?

don't worry - your state of health does not affect your milk supply

keep feeding him, he will get better quicker as your milk makes antibodies for the virus.

oh and hope you both get well soon - tummy bugs are the worst thing, aren't they?

Thanks for replying tante. I can't keeps fluids down and wee is really strong. Breasts feel empty as well. Will I keep making milk if a bit dehydrated?

Sorry you are both poorly. Your milk is definitely the best thing for him.

Drink to keep yourself hydrated, but don't worry about it affecting the quality of your milk, it won't. Hope you feel better soon :)

it says that dehydration may affect supply, so try and drink...even ice cubes or ice lollies...

I had a bug at the weekend and had to keep feeding. DS was fine so I presume milk supply was fine. I had lucozade sports drinks and water. You will be able to stomach fluids soon. Hope you feel better very soon.

Hi Doobies, what a rotten time, hope you feel better soon.

Water plus a teeny bit of salt and sugar is really good for rehydration -little and often. Keep trying and you should be able to keep down small amounts soon.

In the meantime, you could try keeping your DS really close to you all the time and offering the breast as much as humanly possible. It's absolutely right that the breastmilk will help him get better quicker. Extra skin-to-skin contact and frequent feeds will help to maintain your supply and, if nothing else, will probably cheer him up too!
