I am a new mum with a 5 day old baby and am just getting used to BF....its really hard work and demanding but its already getting easier, latching on seems to come naturally to the baby but the feeds are really long 25-1/2 hour every 3 hours....wondering if and when the feeds will become shorter.....

well done you - its great isn't it?
that sounds perfectly normal - some babies take longer still - but the feeds will definitely get shorter as the baby becomes more efficient and his/her stomach grows bigger so it can hold more milk. you will get used to it :)
the night time sleeps should begin to get longer soon so you will start to get a slightly longer stretch then so long as baby knows day / night and has the longest spells of sleep at night.
but you will find that feeding does take up a huge part of your day! enjoy it though - this stage is over way too quickly.

Half an hour every 3 hours sounds pretty good to me! Mine fed for an hour every 2 hours when he was little - we're down to about 20 minutes every 2.5-3 hours now (18 weeks).

Congatulations ClareBou on your new baby! Obviously every baby is different but they quickly learn how to feed more efficiently and soon you will be done and dusted in 10 mins Smile
Every 3 hours is fantastic for a 5 day old - you should be prepared that this may change as he/she has growth spurts and needs to feed more.
I second stinkypants to take full advantage of this oh so special time and try not to worry about the clock at all. You will turn around soon and they will be in school away from you for 6 hours a day!!Sad
Well done x

wow that is shorter and less often than my ds fed until a couple of weeks ago (15 weeks now)! They do get more efficient and space feeds out more as they grow but it can often feel like 2 steps forward one step back as they have growth spurts and feed longer/more frequently for a while. Best to just accept that you'll be spending a lot of time on the sofa, get some good dvds and snacks and always have a drink within reach. It's only a phase and while it can seem overwhelming at the time, it's actually not very long in the grand scheme of things. (I kind of wish feeds took longer now, in the day anyway, as now i have no excuse not to do housework!)
Enjoy your lovely new baby! :)
