Did your periods return whilst BF?

Hi all, just a quick question as I want to know how quickly your period returns if you bf. I have been ebf my LO (26 weeks old) until last week and now bf first and last feeds with formula in the day whilst I am at work. Just wondering if my period will return soon. Thanks

28 months here! And still feeding at 42 months ,Oh my Good Lord this has to stop emoticon

otchayaniye · 06/12/2010 09:06

Wow. someone longer than me!

In some ways I was glad not to have them. But wanted to TTC and have had asherman's (been treated) but wanted to know that I could still have periods.

skandi1 · 06/12/2010 09:30

Yes. EBF'd for 6 months - periods returned when DD was 9 weeks old.

Everyone is different - most of my friends went several months after stopping BFing before their periods returned.

RJandA · 06/12/2010 09:45

EBF to 6 months, then started weaning and carried on bfing.

Period returned at 8 months.

7 months - ds was a frequent feeder (2 hourly round the clock, but had formula due to weight gain issues quite early on). First two irregular, last three very regular though still bfing (12 months).

NinkyNonker · 06/12/2010 16:23

I hope mine does, DD is 4 months and am planning on EBF until at least 6/7 months then BF for as long as she wants. BUT: we will want to TTC again in a yr I expect!

nattivitycake · 06/12/2010 19:01

6wo and feeding on demand, actually about every 2 hours as he had a growth spurt. So seems its not so unusual...

1234ThumbScrew · 06/12/2010 19:05

No - because I got pg again!

spiderlight · 06/12/2010 22:13

Mine came back at 13 months, but I had a loop excision for cervical abnormalities and I'm sure that had something to do with it, as DS was still feeding like mad round the clock and my periods also went haywire after a second loop excision a year later.

headfairy · 06/12/2010 22:16

Mine have returned at 9 months both times regardless of how much feeding I've been doing - with ds I was already back at work by then and down to 2 feeds a day so I assumed that's why my periods came back then. With dd I was still at home with her and doing 4/5 feeds a day including night feeds and my periods still came back at 9 months. I guess that's just what my body does!

AngelDog · 06/12/2010 22:22

Apologies if someone's already posted, but Kellymom has some useful info, including how to help your fertility return without having to give up bf.

No periods yet here at 11 months, but I'm planning on trying to reduce night feeds & collapse a couple of day feeds into one when we get to 13 months if they're still not back, as we'd like to TTC DC2 before too long.

justbeme · 06/12/2010 22:31

Mine return not long after weaning - so at 5 months.

justbeme · 06/12/2010 22:33

I mean - that a couple of weeks after introducing solids, my periods return. Even though I still breast feed and with my current little man - even though he is still feeding 3 times or so in the nights. Damn!

YankNCock · 06/12/2010 23:43

otchayaniye, just out of interest, how long did it take once you'd cut down to 1 feed a day?

devonsmummy · 07/12/2010 00:33

Had 22 period free months after ds was born! He was ebf on demand for 22.5 months
dd is 15 months ebf on demand and still no sign - and that's fine by me!

duchesse · 07/12/2010 00:46

All four times mine have come back many months before I stop breastfeeding. First one would have been 12 months, except I didn't realise I was ovulating and got pregnant and went straight to number 2. Periods came back at 6 months after her despite full breastfeeding, I stopped feeding her at 17 months. After DD2 they came back about 8-9 months despite full breastfeeding (by which I mean she was eating nothing but my milk, no solids or supplemental feeding). After DD3, they came back on the dot of 12 months despite having basically dropped no feeds nor stopped feeding her several times a night. She had started eating solids a couple of months before.

Each time apart from the first when I was down to 3x daily feeds there seems to be no trigger for fertility returning. I don't think I'm typical though.

otchayaniye · 07/12/2010 07:01

Hi YanknCock - I think I cut down over a few weeks and my period came back that month. Whether or not that first period was a proper one remains to be seen, but the next one probably was.

I also have had Ashermans where I didn't have a period (but was ovulating but nothing would embed) prior to getting pregnant with DD for about 4 years (had treatment abroad) so it was reassuring to know my body was working.

One thing though, they are humdingers. Heavy, and painful and last a week. I'd previously only had 2-day periods that were incredibly light and painless. But I'm told having a child can change these things.
