Newborn sliding onto nipple

After letting her do her own thing for 3 nights I'm now trying to make sure she has enough of the breast. It sounds she's drinking away which is great but then sh starts sliding onto nipple. The trouble is ehh I take her off to reposition her she loses interest and so am very worried she's not getting enough. She has very light nappies. I have blood starting to form on my nipples though.

ouch my DD did this and really clamped down as she slid off. I think it lasted less than a week but very painful. RE getting enough I think as long as you are offering frequently she will be fine. They only take tiny amounts to begin with. When your LO is weighed should hopefully give you some reassurance, although expect a small loss to begin with. Congratulations BTW

Thanks a million. I had a much more comfortable night. She's not going to be weighed until next week because the public health nurse doesn't want to slip on the ice with the scales . The blood might be just from the effort of bringing in the milk? La leche freaked me out yesterday by talking about feeding her from a spoon

My ds2 did this on my right side only, midwife recommended using rugby hold to feed and this really helped. But he never lost interest so no advice there.

Dont know it's the same thing but when my daughter was little she used to change the way she was positioned when shevwanted a break, either she just wanted to be winded or when she was very young ( under 6 weeks about) she sometimes needed a 5-10 minute nap before finishing the feed. Even now she changes and suddenly feels like she is pinching or biting me ( even though she has no teeth) when she is trying to either end the feed or take a break.
It has meant much more frequent short feeds but she has a good latch each time and have never had any pain or damage to my nipples.

I am not sure that blood is normal as such ( as in don't put up with it thinking its to be expected) i would think it is a sign of a problem with the latch. Hopefully someone will be able to advise you on that here!

Someone from la leche came last night because she was worried. She said she should be having dirty nappies at every feed at this stage. I hand compressed into her every hour or hour and z half for the night to fill her tummy and eventually this morning she had a couple if tiny poos. I've also been feeding her from a spoon. The first non- meconium ones she's had. I feel like such a terrible mother - I almost starved my baby. Now she looks so tiny and weak and I've gone from feeling over the moon to feeling like I can hardly look at her.

Poor you again- you've had a shock

Don't worry though- it's like you've had some good support from La leche and you can turn things around now.

How old is your baby by the way?

Don't forget to let her feed from one breast and then offer the other if she wants it.

You could also try biological nurturing to help get the latch right. (you can google it)

Try and get some rest and go back to bed and just snuggle up with your baby skin to skin.

Again please believe you have done and are doing brilliantly for your baby, my dc is 15 days old and I am struggling with feeding again, my ds1 lost weight when he was newborn and now ds2 is doing the same. I was devestated last time but am determined this time not to miss out on my time with my newborn.

Feeding from a spoon or cup is not the end of the world, I find it really hard to get a deep enough latch when their mouths are so little and I think that is the root of all my problems. When they are about 4 weeks all the problems seem to dissappear.

We cosleep and she had been on the breast for three nights with only a nappy on. I thought some of it must have been going in. She's 6 days old. She had a PKU test and just wanted to sleep. My last little fella had had jaundice and didn't take to breast for 2 weeks. I just thought she'd work it out

She will, just like my ds will, he was really sleepy the first couple of days and my milk didn't come in full force like it did with the others, can you get some face to face advice. This is my fourth dc and I still don't get the first few weeks. I don't know what I do differently to other people. I had a friend round for coffee the other day who said of course he isn't gaining weight he is breast fed. She has 4 kids and I found it so reassuring that what is happening is quite normal and it's not just that I am crap at it.

I thought it is the usual thing for them to lose weight at first if they are breast fed. My MW seemed very surprised that DD weighed the same at day 5 and had not lost any.

It's more thelack of poos than weight because we don't know the weight. I can hear her poor little tummy working awaythe whole time but nothing's coming out. The doc in the phone said she'd be alright til Monday and to call him then. By the way clueless doc said 6 onces is normal to lose

All she wants to do is look for my breast in the bed to put her head in and have me hold her feet. So worried. Will get out breast pump in morning

Should have been clearer ds1 lost weight until 4 weeks and ds2 still hadn't regained birth weight at two weeks, entirely normal to lose up to 10% but usually regain it by 2 weeks.

At 11 tonight pains stopped poos started and effortless latching started. She's sturdy and it doesn't feel like every feed is crucial to her survival. Normal life can resume. Thanks for all your help. I now remember how great breastfeeding is. All my best to everyone else

That's fantastic, well done for feeding through if, breastfeeding is wonderful but can be bloody hard.

has she been checked for tongue tie? that can cause them to slip down as they can't create a proper suction/latch

can also affect milk transferral and cause nipple trauma

Well done for sticking with it again- hope everything falls in to place now.
