thrush?

Hello everyone
three weeks ago, my left breast hurt into the armpit. went to GP, who said yes, there is some inflammation, nothing we can do, nothing odd, take ibuprofen. this helped a litle, but over the last two days, the pain has gotten much, much worse - the whole left breast is REALLY sore and painful to the touch. If my baby bangs against it slightly, it brings tears to my eyes. The nipple and breast have been slightly itchy.

tonight, the right breast started to hurt in a similar fashion. it's not too painful at the moment, but is sore nearer my armpit and deep in breast.

Does this sound like thrush to anyone? It really hurts when I have the letdown reflex, even if baby is not feding. It is not noticeably more sore while feeding. It remains sore all the time - baby is still feeding every 2-3 hours, so not sure if it would be less sore after this time period.

I am going back to GP tomorrow armed with BfN leaflet, but just wondered if this degree of pain sounded similar to other people's experiences with thrush.

thank you!

Thrush feels like someone is shoving a shard of glass through your nipple as the baby latches on and feeds. My nipples were a bit itchy between feeds but the real pain was at feeding. It would get shooting pains down the breast towards the nipple as my DD sucked. It was never out towards the armpit.

Could it possibly be a blocked duct/mastitis?

How long have you been BF? Have you been painfree until this point?

It sounds similar to what I've had which was mastitus. You can feel tender for quite a while. Have you been feeling under the weather at all?

Thank you both for your replies - I went to see GP today, who gave me antibiotics just in case it is an infection. Bf has been totaly pain free up until now - I haven't really been feeling under the weather at all, and couldn't feel any lumps for it to be mastitis/blocked duct. GP said she couldn't feel any lumps/masses etc either.

Still not really sure what is wrong, but I will take antibiotics and see how we go. Pain is now in right breast as well, and left boob really very sore now, right under arm and into back.

Of course, my concern is if is not an infection, and I take antibiotics, I am leaving myself open to thrush! Ah well.

Thank you for your replies.

Right if you're on AB you need to take some probiotics as well to combact the potential for thrush. This was mentioned on another thread, I'm not sure what ones you take but someone around these parts should be able to advise.

I hope the AB clears whatever is happening in there.

Agree with HermyaAndThePomBears I always drink actimel when taking antibiotics to prevent thrush. Thrush pain is more in the nipple than breast. Hope it clears up soon.
